ACU Collects Four Titles at WAC Championships

OREM, Utah – Abilene Christian claimed four event championships on the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
 
The ACU women finished fifth in the team standings with 83 points and the men were seventh with 71 points.
 
Ella Anttila defended her championship in the triple jump, clearing 41 feet, 8 inches. Luize Velmere was third, giving ACU 17 points in the event, at 40-6.5.
 
The women's 4x400 relay team of Shiean Walters, Savannah McCaleb, Ja'Kaylon Sabbath and Ja'Dasia Sims finished off the meet with the women's second win of the day at 3:38.57.
 
Athan Huelskamp went out a champion, winning the men's discus with a throw of 168-11.25 to lead a trio of ACU scorers in the event. Colt Cooper was fourth at 162-8.5 and Stone Smith placed eighth at 153-7.75.
 
Cooper Goggans used a big kick on the final curve to take the men's 800 meters in 1:50.53.
 
Sims had a strong day for the women, scoring in three events. She was second in the high jump at 5-8 and seventh at 55.64 behind Walters in the 400 to go with her relay win. Walters was second in the 400 at 53.89.
 
Riley Pyeatt and Jess Reyes scored in the women's 800 meters with Pyeatt in third at 2:12.63 and Reyes in fifth at 2:13.70.
 
Bella Evans was third in the 1500 meters at 4:35.43.
 
Avery Myrick placed seventh in the women's discus at 142-7.75.
 
The ACU men had three scorers in the 110 hurdles, led by Jeremy King in fifth place at 14.13. Miguel Hall was seventh at 14.41 and Ryan Bornemeier placed eighth at 14.55.
 
Christian Morales was fourth in the men's javelin at 206-6.5.
 
Garrison Shindler scored in seventh place in the men's 1500 at 3:49.18.
 
Matthew Mills, Tyce Chaney, Canaan Fairley and Goggans placed sixth in the men's 4x400 relay to close out the meet.
 
On Friday, Fairley placed fourth and Ethan Christian was eighth in the decathlon with 6844 and 6532 points, respectively.
 
Eliza Lemberga placed second with 5075 points in the heptathlon with Natalie Poe in fourth at 4538.
 
The ACU men also scored in the men's shot put with Huelskamp getting third in the shot put at 56-1.5 and Gabe Embree in seventh in the 3000 meter steeplechase at 9:29.54.
 
On Thursday, Kaitlyn Callaway threw the hammer 144 feet, 9.5 inches in her final toss to claim second place for the Wildcats.
 
The ACU men scored in two events with Sutton Welch (183-6.75) and Rylan Smart (176-9.25) getting fourth and fifth in the men's hammer through.
 
Kevin Castruita and Levi Chambers scored in the men's 10K with Castruita getting fifth at 31:12.15 and Chambers finishing eighth at 31:23.42.
 
ACU has three headed to the West Regional in Fayetteville, Ark., May 22-25 – Goggans in the men's 800, Anttila in the women's triple jump and Callaway in the women's javelin.
