Biography

2022-2023: Indoors – competed in 5 meets on the year for the Wildcats, with several highlights during the year: 2nd in the Washburn Open in the weight throw, 4th in the TTU Jarvis Scott Invitational shot put, and 3rd in the Matador Qualifier in the SP and 6th in the WT. At the WAC indoor championship, he would finish 2nd in the WT (with a new PR of 62-1.75/18.94m) and 4th in the SP. Outdoors – a very busy year for Athan outdoors competing in 8 meets during the season, placing 3rd in the Wes Kittley SP, 4th in the TTU Masked Rider SP and DT, 2nd in the SP (with a PR of 56-2.5/17.13)  and 4th in the DT at the David Noble Relays, and winning the Oliver Jackson Twilight SP. After an injury during the next-to-last meet of the outdoor season, Athan would come back to finish 2nd in the WAC Championship SP,  throwing on an injured foot. 

2021-2022: Indoors – competed in 4 indoor meets indoors. And, at the end of the season at the WAC indoor championship, he was 10th in the shot put and 18th in the weight throw. Outdoors – at the WAC outdoor championship, he placed 7th in the discus and 14th in the shot put. Placed 6th in the Oliver Jackson Twilight discus with a new PR of 169-9/51.74m. Also 5th at the Masked Rider Open hammer throw in Lubbock with a PR toss of 161-11/49.36m.

2020-2021: Indoors – at the SLC indoor championship, he was 4th in the WT and 6th in the SP – the indoor season was a redshirt year due to the pandemic for all T&F athletes. Outdoors – redshirted this season.

Before ACU: Had his HS senior year scuttled by the cancelling of the track season due to the pandemic, but in his HS junior year he was runner-up in the Illinois 2A shot put and discus and that year (2019), he was ranked #102 among all HS discus throwers in the U.S. Athan was Male Athlete of the Year at St Viator and would leave HS as the school record holder in both the SP and DT. In 2019, competing in the AAU Junior Olympic Nationals 17-18-year-old division, he finished 5th in the SP and 7th in the DT. 

Personal: Athan graduated from Chicago St Viator HS in 2020. He is a Communications major at ACU. His parents are Tim and Angela Huelskamp – his Father, Tim, is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas.
