2/22/2023 10:13:00 PM | Track & Field
ABILENE – Abilene Christian sends 44 athletes to Washington this weekend for the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Twenty-two women and 22 men from ACU are scattered across all 32 events of the two-day championship.
The Wildcats are predicted to place fifth in the men's meet and seventh in the women's with Grand Canyon picked to win the men's team title and New Mexico State selected by WAC coaches as the favorite in the women's events.
"I am really looking forward to the WAC indoor championships," said ACU Head Coach Jerrod Cook. "I want to see our teams rise to the occasion, compete, and perform to their potential. We have a lot of athletes that are going in ranked just outside of the top eight. The mindset is to fight for every centimeter, every 10th of a second. It doesn't matter where you are ranked going in. The outcome is determined by what we do there."
ACU athletes are expected to compete for several event championships, including a few with the best marks heading into the competition.
Ella Anttila carries in the best mark in the women's triple jump at 12.75 meters with Irene Rono owning the No. 5 mark in the 5000 meters at 16:43.84.
Jack Marshall has the fastest time coming into the 200 meters with a school record of 20.91 seconds. Jamal January brings the second-best mark, 7.92 seconds, into the 60-meter high hurdles.
Tyler Richardson owns the top mark coming into the shot put at 18.12 meters while Athan Huelskamp ranks second in the weight throw at 18.48 and third in the shot at 16.74.
