
Women’s tennis splits weekend matches against North Texas and Sam Houston

ABILENE — Wildcat women's tennis secured a 4-1 victory over Sam Houston State University on Saturday at the Judi and Cecil Eager Pavilion, following a 6-1 defeat to the University of North Texas on Friday. In the match against Sam Houston, the Wildcats clinched the doubles point with wins for Masha Vrsalovic / Maria Cascos and Jess Board / Alice Klinteby and sealed the match with three singles victories.
Cascos and Vrsalovic claimed a dominant 6-1 win over their doubles opponents while Board and Klinteby won their match 6-3 against Sam Houston. Victoria Correa / Angela Del Campo were tied at 4-4 before the match was unfinished.
On the other hand, the Wildcats scored their lone point against North Texas from Klinteby's singles match (6-3, 7-5). UNT secured the doubles point in the first two matches, but was leading the third.
In singles play against Sam Houston, the Wildcats responded to Vrsalovic's loss on court one with Del Campo's victory (6-2, 6-1) over her opponent. Klinteby extended the lead with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in her match. Elsa Luthar clinched the match for the Wildcats with a straight-set win over Sam Houston, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. The matches on courts two and five were left unfinished, with Cascos and Correa each holding competitive positions in their matches.

The Wildcats will get a longer break before traveling to New Mexico on Feb. 28 to take on the Lobos at 10 a.m.
The Lobos are 7-2 on the season, including a 4-3 win over the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, a team the Wildcats beat 6-1.
