ABILENE - Abilene Christian's men's and women's tennis teams each won their 15th dual match of the spring Wednesday night with back-to-back shutouts of former NCAA Division II rival Midwestern State on a cloudy, breezy night at the Eager Tennis Center.
The victory lifted the men's record to 15-9, while the women improved to 15-5. Both sides also were coming off a rare Southland Conference loss. The men fell 5-2 to Lamar last Saturday at home, and the women tonight bounced back from a 4-3 loss April 1 at Northwestern State. The Wildcats will resume conference play and their hunt for the regular-season title Friday when they play host to Incarnate Word at noon.
Tonight, the Wildcat men were flat out dominant against the 21st-ranked Mustangs and their ninth-ranked singles player Ramon Toyos, who Josh Sheehy beat at the top line, 7-6, 6-2. Sheehy had to battle his way back in the first set after being down, 5-4, but cruised through the tiebreak and second set in improving to 14-7 at the No. 1 position.
Sheehy's younger brother, Jonathan, also was a straight-set winner at No. 2 and 6-4, 6-3 decision over Angel Palacios evened his season mark at 11-11 as he won his fifth-consecutive match. He also is 7-1 since March 3 following a 4-10 start.
Senior Nico Agritelley, junior Henry Adams, junior Hunter Holman and sophomore Sebastian Langdon also were winners tonight, and Holman's 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 kept him tied with Josh Sheehy for most wins on the team with 14.
Agritelley and Adams won for the 10th time together in doubles at No. 1 line, 6-3, and at No. 2, the Sheehy brothers won, 6-2, in just their second match together this spring. Cole Lawson and Paul Michael Domanski were 6-4 winners at No. 3 in their spring debut.
On the women's side, junior Lucile Pothier played at No. 1 for just the third time all spring and posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Daria Panferova, while the usual No. 1 Erin Walker was a 6-4, 6-4 winner vs. Eirini Kontaki. The remaining four players were equally strong in their matches as Whitney Williams, Sarah Eleanor Adams, Autumn Crossnoe and Jordan Henry all won in straight sets with no member of the opposition scoring more than four points.
Adams' win at No. 4 over Maddy Coffman was her team leading 17th of the spring, and Henry pushed her winning streak to five matches to remain tied with Williams with 15 singles wins.
ACU's doubles winners tonight were Williams / Walker at No. 1, and Pothier / Adams at No. 2. Walker and Williams have won their last five to improve to 8-3 overall.
