HAMMOND, La. - Abilene Christian women's tennis lost its first Southland Conference match of the spring Tuesday, dropping a closely contested 4-3 decision to Southeastern Louisiana at the SLU Tennis Complex.
The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for the Wildcats who are now 11-5 overall and 1-1 vs. the league, while the Lady Lions improved to 9-4 and 5-1.
Much like Saturday's home dual vs. Stephen F. Austin, today's match involved several lead changes and came down to the last few matches. Unfortunately, the Wildcats this afternoon lost the doubles point, and after taking a 3-2 lead, dropped its singles contests at the No. 6 and 2 positions.
After sophomore Lucile Pothier earned ACU's third point with her sixth-consecutive victory over Dany Raygadas at No. 3, 6-4, 6-3, Wildcat sophomore Andrea Crook fell to Madina Vorotnikova at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1, and then Dalina Dahlmans clinched the victory, beating senior Kaysie Hermsdorf at No. 2, 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.
ACU started singles by receiving wins from two of its Saturday heroes. Sophomore Whitney Williams at No. 5, cruised past Ceci Mercier, 6-2, 6-1, for her third-straight win, and senor Nada Marjanovic improved to a team-best 15-2 with her 6-1, 6-3 decision over Lucia Bustamante at No. 4.
Marjanovic has won her last six matches and is 9-0 at the No. 4 position.
In doubles, ACU lost its first point since Feb. 14. Raygadas and Margaux Kaltenbacher upset Crook and Marjanovic at No. 3, 6-1. Hermsdorf and Pothier momentarily tied the score at 1-1 following their 6-2 triumph at No. 2 over Bustamante and Mercier.
Dahlmans and Renee Villarreal captured the all-important first point, doubling up Williams and Erin Walker, 6-3, who are now 10-6 on the season.
Hermsdorf and Pothier lead the Wildcats with a 13-6 doubles record.
ACU's busy week continues Wednesday with a 12 p.m. men's and women's doubleheader at Nicholls. The Wildcats then head to New Orleans Friday for a dual with the Privateers.
