Women’s tennis beats Falcons, falls to No. 17 Red Raiders in Lubbock
1/30/2016 11:06:00 PM | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Abilene Christian women's tennis Saturday defeated its old NCAA DII rivals Texas-Permian Basin, 7-0, but couldn't produce any points against 17th-ranked Texas Tech and settled for a doubleheader split on the courts of the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Wildcats fell to 4-3 on the spring after losing to the undefeated Red Raiders, who are now 4-0.
ACU dropped its first two doubles matches by matching 6-1 scores, and in singles lost in straight sets at the No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 positions. Matches at No. 1 and 4 involving junior Erin Walker and senior Nada Marjanovic were left unfinished, which is unfortunate considering Walker led Lynn Kiro, 6-4, 2-0, at the top line when the match was clinched.
Marjanovic lost her first set, 6-4, to Alex Valenstein and was trailing 2-1 in the second, but because the match was never completed, her four-match winning streak remains in tact. She improved to a team-best 7-1 on the spring after beating Andrea Villalobos of Permian Basin, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot this morning.
All the Wildcats defeated the Falcons in straight sets, with the closest match taking place at No. 2 where senior Kaysie Hermsdorf beat Maria Orona, 7-6, 6-2. And in doubles, ACU won by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3.
The Wildcats return to action Wednesday with a home-opener doubleheader vs. UTSA and St. Edward's. Match times are 12 and 4 p.m. and each dual likely will be played indoors as Wednesday's temperature is expected to reach a high of 47 degrees.
