Rainwater building confidence within young WTEN roster

ABILENE - Bryan Rainwater knows this season will be an exercise in patience as he begins his first year as the Abilene Christian head women's tennis coach surrounded by several new faces.
This is Rainwater's third season with the program, but earlier this year he was elevated from assistant to head coach. Only two upperclassmen - Maryjoe Crisologo and Andrea Guerrero - however, remain from last season's squad, and this fall they were joined by freshmen Maria Cascos, Olivia Sears, and Masha Vrsalovic along with returning sophomores Eva Arranz and Paula Garrote.
Crisologo, Guerrero and Arranz all were part of ACU's historic lineup that upset top-seeded Grand Canyon, 4-3, at last spring's WAC Championships, and during this fall season they and their teammates continued progressing through an intense series of tournaments hosted by Angelo State, TCU and SMU.
"It was good having all the women play at each tournament and being met with some success," said Rainwater. "They were getting used to one another as teammates and me as their coach, and while there were some nerves on the courts, there also were moments of domination.
"The upperclassmen meshed well with the youngsters," he continued. "They're hanging out and joking around. Andi and MJ are great leaders who emulate the program's mission and who have gone a long way in helping the freshmen adapt to the college lifestyle."
The fall campaign began in early September with the Angelo State Slamfest, where the Wildcats recorded 15 triumphs including a doubles flight victory for Crisologo and Sears. Together they beat two teams from Texas State and another duo from Tarleton.
The Wildcat tandems of Guerrero and Vrsalovic, and Arranz and Cascos, additionally scored two wins apiece through three appearances at ASU.
ACU was just as consistent in singles play, winning eight contests as Crisologo, Cascos and Garrote each won twice in their respective flights.
From there the Wildcats ventured to Ft. Worth for the annual ITA Texas Regional Championships, where Rainwater says, "there's nowhere to hide when going against Power Five opposition."
Even still, ACU held its own vs. the best of the Lone Star State, collecting nine singles victories and claiming a memorable 8-3 doubles victory (Crisologo and Sears) over Longhorns Simran Kortikere and Susanna Brass.
"That tournament was a big test," said Rainwater, "but we got some good results. Sometimes we had to play outside our means, but that meant getting several players into the main draw and being able to beat teams from Texas and Prairie View."
Crisologo and Guerrero won a combined six singles matches through eight tries with wins coming against opposition from UIW, UTSA and Rice. Garrote, Vrsalovic and Cascos, meanwhile, each went 1-1.
ACU wrapped its fall earlier this month at SMU, and there the Wildcats won on seven occasions with two doubles wins coming from Guerrero and Arraz.
"I thought we finished on a positive note," said Rainwater. "I saw our players compete with more confidence and believed in themselves even in the close losses. They were grinding and always working on the little things that can improve their games. This offseason I'm expecting for that to continue and to see them getting stronger in the gym."
The Wildcats begin their 2023 spring season at SMU with a dual match set for Wednesday, Jan. 18.
