ABILENE --- Abilene Christian Director of Tennis John Walker Friday announced the signings of Maryjoe Crisologo and Oswaldo Cano to National Letters of Intent. The future Wildcats will begin competing for ACU in August of 2020.
"I can't wait to start working with Maryjoe and Oswaldo," said Walker. "Their abilities and personalities make them perfect fits for this university and tennis program. I have no doubt they'll continue our traditions of excellence both on the court and in the classroom. They are both immediate impact competitors."
Cano currently plays at Barton (Kansas) Community College where he's been ranked as high as 16th in NJCAA singles and 11th in doubles. Last year's Cougars team posted an 8-3 record and were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, as Cano won 24 conference matches at No. 1 and reached four regional tournament finals.
Prior to his time in Kansas, Cano ranked among the 10 best players in Mexico for the better part of six years. He began his career at age 12, and only a few years later earned a No. 2 national ranking in the 15s category. Twice he's represented Mexico during winter tours of the United States, he's also earned the opportunities to compete at G1 Nationals, Mexico National Olympic Games, and Mexican Championships, which features the country's top 16 players.
Cano graduated from Jhosannes Kepler high school in 2017, and plans to major in sport and recreation management at ACU.
Crisologo hails from Surrey, British Columbia, where she is a senior at Pacific Academy. She plans to study biology at ACU before moving on to medical school with hopes of becoming a pediatrician.
She is a 4.0 student whose diverse list of interests also includes basketball, volleyball, cross country, track and field, badminton and concert band.
On the court, Crisologo has represented her province five times at Canadian Junior Nationals and was a 2019 U18 doubles semifinalist during the outdoor season. Earlier this year she won the U18 singles title at the B.C. Junior Provincial Championships and captured her third provincial doubles crown.
Within her province, Crisologo has been ranked as high as No. 6 in U18 singles and No. 7 in doubles, while her best national rankings have been 53rd and 37th, respectively.
The 2020 spring seasons for the defending Southland Conference regular-season champions begin the weekend of January 10. The men will be in Norman, Okla., for duals vs. Tennessee and Oklahoma, while the women go further north to Stillwater to play Oklahoma State and Wichita State.
