SURPRISE, Ariz. – Abilene Christian's fifth-ranked women's tennis team is heading back to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals for the fourth time in five years following its 5-0 victory Wednesday over No. 6 Columbus State in a Round of 16 match played at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
The Wildcats have now won 15 straight matches in improving to 28-5 on the season, while the Cougars see their fine season come to an end at 22-4. Prior to tonight, Columbus State's lone defeats were against the defending national champions from Armstrong Atlantic and last year's national finalists from BYU-Hawai'i.
ACU's primary strength this spring has been the play of its doubles and tonight it was no different as the Wildcats swept all three matches in lifting their win-loss total to an astonishing 81-11 (.880).
The sixth-ranked combination of Julia Mongin and Brittney Reed were done first after shocking the nation's No. 3 duo of Paola Cigui and Carolin Weikard, 8-2, and then last year's all-Americas Hannah Kelley and Micah Hermsdorf pushed the lead to 2-0 following their 8-6 win over Laura Chapman and Olivera Jokic.
ACU's No. 3 tandem Kaysie Hermsdorf and Laura Mongin trailed at several points tonight, but prevailed down the stretch to beat Renata Paiva and Andrea Redrado, 8-6, and hand their teammates a commanding 3-0 advantage heading into singles.
“The doubles were impressive,” said head coach Hutton Jones, “especially at No. 1 against a very tough team from Columbus State. I really believe we're competing well, but we're capable of playing at a higher level and we'll need to see an upward progression to get through tomorrow's match.”
While the Wildcats' top four players all were engaged in seesaw battles, ACU's No. 5 and 6 players Kelley and Kaysie Hermsdorf provided an immediate shot of momentum with two convincingly quick first-set victories. Hermsdorf beat Paiva in the first set 6-1; while Kelley soon followed with a 6-2 win vs. Redrado.
Minutes later, Micah Hermsdorf, Reed and Laura Mongin all wrapped up their first sets by matching 6-4 scores. Reed went on to dominate 46th-ranked Jokic in the second set, 6-0, for ACU's fourth point, and then Mongin clinched it with her 6-2 second-set decision over Chapman.
The shutout victory was ACU's fifth straight and fourth of the postseason, which includes two at the Lone Star Conference Championships.
ACU's No. 1 player and 15th-ranked singles competitor Julia Mongin lost her first set to Cigui, 6-4, and was trailing 3-2 when the match was halted. Cigui entered the week with a 22-0 record and was ranked No. 1 in D-II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
“Julia was right there with the No. 1 girl in the country and I believe she's getting back to form after that injury,” said Jones. “We have to have her playing like this moving forward.”
The Wildcats play again Thursday at 2 p.m. CT vs. #13 West Florida in the NCAA quarterfinals. ACU beat West Florida, 5-4, earlier this season in Pensacola, Fla.
