ACU Beats Dallas Baptist, 5-2, Behind Strong Singles Play

ABILENE - The Abilene Christian women's tennis team earned its second win in a row with a 5-2 victory over Dallas Baptist on Tuesday afternoon at the Judi and Cecil Eager Tennis Pavilion. The Wildcats improved to 2-6 on the year following Sunday's 6-1 triumph over Incarnate Word.
The Patriots struck first by claiming the doubles point within the indoor facility. ACU's pairing of Olivia Sears and Maria Cascos earned a 6-3 win in its matchup, but it wasn't enough to overcome losses by the Wildcats' other two tandems.
Masha Vrsalovic and Alice Klinteby suffered defeat at the hands of Dallas Baptist's Madalyn Smelley and Isabella Arana Rios by a 7(3)-6 margin, while the Patriot duo of Emily Buchanan and Jenna Payne secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Angela Del Campo and Hebe Toyos.
The Wildcats were quick to rebound in singles action, though, claiming five of six matches en route to the day's victory. Sears continued her success with a 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Leonie Schondelmaier, while Cascos beat Arana Rios, 6-1, 6-4.
Vrsalovic continued ACU's momentum with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Katherine Robinson before Del Campo's dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory versus Smelley secured a victory for the Wildcats. Jess Board added another point for good measure in a 6-0, 7-6(A) defeat of Andrea Delgado. The Patriots salvaged a point as Buchanan beat Klinteby, 6-2, 6-2.
"We came out slow in doubles, but I am really pleased with how we responded in singles," head coach Bryan Rainwater said. "We will get back to work this week, but it feels good to be back on a positive track."
ACU looks to stretch its win streak to three matches when it travels to Nacogdoches to face Stephen F. Austin at 12 p.m. Friday.
