ABILENE – Abilene Christian completed its four-match, two-week homestand Sunday at the Eager Tennis Center with a 5-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to remain undefeated against the Southland Conference at 8-0. The Wildcats are 12-8 overall and will finish their spring season on the road over the next two weekends with matches against first-place Northwestern State, third-place Central Arkansas and sixth-place McNeese.
ACU today won the doubles point followed by four singles victories with the match-clinching point earned by freshman Allison Stewart at the No. 5 line over Myu Kageyama, 6-2, 6-4. Stewart won all four of her matches during this homestand and remains a perfect 8-0 against Southland opposition. She also helped the Wildcats score the doubles point as she and senior Jordan Henry held off Camille Townsend and Vanessa Reinicke, 6-4.
The first doubles victory was picked up by the Wildcats' top-line duo of sophomore Nini Memishishi and Sarah Adams, which toppled Carolina Bulatovic and Mariya Shumeika, 6-2, for their 13th win together this spring.
Memishishi additionally posted an incredible comeback at No. 1 singles, battling back from a first-set shutout (0-6) to beat Bulatovic over the next two sets 6-4, 7-5. The win evened her spring record at 11-11. She also is 7-5 at the top position and 6-2 vs. league opponents.
The two remaining singles wins were courtesy of senior Autumn Bellow and sophomore Ileana Mocciola. Bellow defeated Kei Kato, 6-2, 6-3, for win No. 10 on the year, while Mocciola downed Maria Maldonado, 6-2, 6-4, for her seventh conference triumph.
Heading into this weekend, ACU is slated to play Friday and Sunday at 11 a.m. at both Northwestern State and Central Arkansas, and at a neutral-site Saturday, April 20 vs. McNeese. The Wildcats were engaged in four one-point decisions with all three of these teams last season. They lost at home to UCA and McNeese, beat NSU during the regular season, but lost to the Lady Demons in the first round of the Southland Conference Championship.
