Cowgirls hang on to defeat Wildcats in women's tennis dual, 4-3
4/2/2015 7:46:00 PM | Women's Tennis
LAKE CHARLES, La. - Abilene Christian women's tennis dropped a 4-3 decision to McNeese in an epic four-hour clash Thursday at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center to begin a two-match Southland Conference road trip that concludes Friday morning at Nicholls.
The dual was decided at No. 5 singles, where Sarah Jurakova rallied from a set down to defeat previously unbeaten ACU junior Nada Marjanovic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Marjanovic started the year 8-0.
ACU grabbed an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point behind victories at the No. 1 and 2 postions. Sophomore Erin Walker and freshman Whitney Williams pushed their win streak to three following an 8-6 victory over the team of Julia Kral and Hannah Brett, while at No. 1, ACU's Brittney Reed and Kaysie Hermsdorf improved to 12-1 with their 8-6 triumph against Klaudia Gawlik and Anastasija Trubic.
Three of Reed's and Hermsdorf's dozen wins at No. 1 have come against Southland opposition.
The Wildcats' lead unfortunately disappeared as the Cowgirls stormed back with three consecutive straight-set wins over ACU's top-three players: Hermsdorf, Reed and Lucile Pothier.
With the score in McNeese's favor at 3-1, Williams helped the Wildcats climb back in the dual by holding off Trubich at No. 6, 6-2, 7-5, for her fifth-straight singles victory. Walker then tied the score a final time at 3-3, beating Vivien Borbely, 7-5, 6-1.
Walker's win gives her a 7-5 singles record on the spring. She is 10-5 in doubles.
Friday's match at Nicholls is a doubleheader with the men's team, which is playing its first Southland dual in close to a month. The twinbill begins at 10:30 a.m.
