THIBODAUX, La. - Abilene Christian's men's and women's tennis teams were swept at Nicholls Friday morning in a pair of very close and competitive duals vs. the Colonels. The ACU women lost their third-straight 4-3 decision while on the road in conference play, while the men fell 4-2 in an abbreviated contest.
For the second straight day, the Wildcat women's team went into the break ahead 1-0 after winning the doubles point with some ease. The No. 1 duo of Brittney Reed and Kaysie Hermsdorf vanquished Stephanie Barnett and Klara Skopac, 8-2, for their 13th win of the spring and fourth against a conference foe.
And at No. 2, the tandem of junior Erin Walker and freshman Whitney Williams won their fourth straight together to improve to 7-5, doubling up the team of Marie Aubert and Milou Pietersz, 8-4.
All the singles matches were decided in straight sets with nine of the 12 games determined by two or fewer points. But the second-place Colonels (15-4, 7-1) finished ahead in four of the six contests, winning from Nos. 1 -3 and at No. 6, where Williams had her five-match winning streak snapped by Isla Brock, 6-4, 6-4.
Hermsdorf and Reed, competing at No. 1 and 2, respectively, came close to pushing their matches to a third set, but Hermsdorf lost in the second game to Barnett, 7-6, and Reed lost hers to Skopac, 7-5.
ACU's two singles victories were attained at No. 4 and 5 by Walker and junior Nada Marjanovic. Walker held off Pietersz, 6-3, 7-6, for win No. 8, while Marjanovic improved to 9-1 with a 7-6, 7-5 edging of Kateryna Nakonechna.
The Wildcats' men's team lost its doubles point to the Colonels and later dropped three of the five finished singles' contests. Junior Marco Bensley's match at No. 6 vs. Max Sinn was left unfinished with Sinn leading 4-2 in the second game after falling 7-6 in the first.
Winning today for ACU were senior Guilherme Gesser, who topped Partha Adavelly in three sets 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, and sophomore Nico Agritelley, who won his third straight and 15th match of the season behind a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 3 over Evan Karatzas.
The men are back home Sunday, April 12 for a doubleheader vs. Lamar and Texas-Permian Basin that starts at 11:44 a.m. The women, meanwhile, will play at Texas on April 7 and have two games in the Metroplex vs. Dallas Baptist and SMU on April 10 before playing host to Sam Houston State and Lamar the weekend of April 11.
