
Wildcats Fall Short in Second Round of ASUN Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Abilene Christian University lost a tight match to the University of North Alabama 4-3 on Wednesday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Wildcats secured singles victories at the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 positions and claimed a doubles win at the No. 3 flight.
Abilene Christian fell behind early as North Alabama secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Merse Deli / Ethan Scribner narrowly lost at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, and Luis Jose Nakamine / Tomas Quesada fell at No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 decision.
The Wildcats' Jorge Aza / Dennis Dutiné earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but the team did not claim the point.
In singles, North Alabama extended its lead with wins in the first two completed matches as Aza fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and Scribner followed with a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 6 singles, putting North Alabama ahead 3-0.
Deli put the Wildcats on the scoreboard with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
Nakamine reduced the deficit further with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, overcoming his opponent 6-3, 7-5, bringing the match score to 3-2. Dutiné leveled the dual at 3-3 after his 7-6(4), 6-4 triumph at No. 3 singles.
However, in a tense final match, North Alabama clinched the dual as Tomas Quesada dropped the deciding match 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 at No. 2 singles.
The Wildcats finish the season 10-7 overall, with an impressive 7-1 home record. Several ACU losses came to ranked Power Four programs, such as Oklahoma, Texas and TCU.
In the first season as an affiliate member of the ASUN, the team had two all-conference selections–Nakamine and Aza–and two all-academic selections–Deli and Scribner.
The team also found its first conference tournament win as a member of the ASUN on April 14 in a 4-0 sweep of Queens University.
