NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Abilene Christian's Gus Tettamble and Luis Jose Nakamine finished a masterful run at the ASUN Men's Tennis Individual Tournament with a doubles championship on Saturday at Lipscomb University.
The performance means Tettamble and Nakamine advance to the ITA Conference Masters, a first for ACU. The tournament will be played Nov. 5-8 in Rome, Ga. From the field of 32 doubles teams, the two finalists will qualify for spots in the NCAA Championship in Athens, Ga. beginning Nov. 17.
Entering the event as the No. 1 seed, Nakamine and Tettamble cruised through their first three matches, including a 6-2 win in Saturday morning's semifinals over Eastern Kentucky's Will Roberts and Jacquyn Colalancia.
Immediately after, the Wildcats squared off in the championship match against Goncalo Quintela and Mark Neyelov from West Florida. Playing a pro set to 8, Nakamine and Tettamble rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the match at 7-all and force a tiebreaker. The ACU duo completed the gutsy comeback by winning the tiebreaker 7-4 for the decisive point.
Nakamine is in his second season at ACU after transferring from Baylor. Tettamble spent four years at Tulsa and joined the Wildcats before the 2026-27 season.
In singles competition at the ASUN Individual Tournament, three of the four semifinalists were from Abilene Christian.Â
Nakamine, fresh off two doubles matches, went the distance agaisnt teammate Merse Deli. After Deli won the first set 6-4, Nakamine answered by skunking Deli 6-0 in set two. Deli earned the third set tiebreaker 10-4 and advanced to the championship match.Â
On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 seed Dennis Dutine took on No. 2 seed Alberto Altur from North Alabama. Dutine gave Altur his best challenge of the week, but could not overcome him in a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.
