ACU Opens Fall Season with Successful Trip to Coastal Bend

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Abilene Christian men's tennis team won two flights, and finished top three in four others at the season-opening 2026 Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over the weekend.
In singles competition, new Wildcat Gus Tettamble won the Purple Flight with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 [10-6] victory in the championship match over Raefael Ruiz from UIW. Tettamble transferred to ACU from Tulsa right before the fall semester.
Two other ACU players -- senior Dennis Dutine in the top flight (Blue), and freshman Grant Lothringer in the Orange Flight -- reached their respective championship matches Sunday morning but lost in three sets. Luis Jose Nakamine also competed in the Blue Flight, and secured third place with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 [10-8] triumph over UT Rio Grande Valley's Ivo Isquerio.
In doubles, Nakamine and Lothringer teamed up to claim third place in Flight A with a dominating 6-0 win against UIW's Gobin / Monteverde.
Alejandro Verdasco and David Kirchner showed out during a run to earned the Flight B title. The pair defeated Lamar's Shukuda / Bergh in the championship match 6-4 on Sunday morning.
Merse Deli, Jorge Aza, Jonas Keck and Griffin Lovern also took the court this weekend for ACU.

The Wildcats travel to Tulsa, Okla. for the ITA Men's All-American Championships which begins with pre-qualifying matches on Saturday, Sept. 19.
