ROME, Ga. - Abilene Christian men's doubles pair of Luis Jose Nakamine and Gus Tettamble finished their run at the ITA Conference Masters in the semifinals on Sunday, one win shy of an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Nakamine and Tettamble, the ASUN Individual Tournament Doubles Champions, lost to a pair from Wake Forest, 7-6 [7-4], 6-4 on Sunday. The two finalists from the field of 31 doubles teams received spots in the NCAA Tournament later this month in Athens, Ga.
The Wildcats showed strength and resiliency in their run to the semis as they swept opponents from Grand Canyon and Wagner in the first two rounds. In Saturday's quarterfinal match, ACU rallied to defeated a pair from UNC Wilmington in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-7 [7-4], 1-0 [10-7].
The two, who are also roommates in Abilene, made history as the first Wildcats to get this far in the pursuit of an NCAA Tournament berth since the singles and doubles events were moved to the fall semester.
"What I really take is the moment and how much fun we're having—playing doubles with [Gus] and with the team," said Nakamine after winning the ASUN championship in Nashville on Oct. 24.
For Tettamble, who transferred from Tulsa, and Nakamine, who began his career at Baylor, the run is also a reflection of how at home they feel at ACU.
"We both transferred here at different times, and I know this school means a lot to both of us," Tettamble said. "To reach these goals for the school and represent our team—it's pretty exciting."
ACU tennis will now take a break until the spring semester for the team season beginning in January.
