NATCHITOCHES, La. - Several season-opening winning streaks came to end Sunday for the Abilene Christian women's tennis team as it lost for the first time this spring, 5-2, to the Lady Demons of Northwestern State.
The victory lifted Northwestern State's season record to 8-6 as they remained tied for first place in the Southland Conference with Nicholls at 4-0.
The only wins attained by the Wildcats (6-1, 2-1 Southland) at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex were an 8-4 decision by their No. 3 doubles team of Lucile Pothier and Carli Knezevich and No. 5 and 6 singles triumphs from freshman Whitney Williams and junior Nada Marjanovic.
Pothier and Knezevich won their contest, 8-4, over the tandem of Aliona Ladutska and Emily Kerr to tie the doubles series at 1-1, but Williams and sophomore Erin Walker couldn't quite catch the No. 2 duo of Barbora Kollarova and Polin Ivanova, losing 8-6.
Senior Brittney Reed and junior Kaysie Hermsdorf were first off the court, losing 8-1 to the team of Tatiana Larina and Natalya Krutova. The defeat was their first of the spring following an awesome 11-0 start.
Hermsdorf later saw her eight-match singles winning streak broken at the hands of Krutova on the No. 2 court, 6-3, 6-2, which gave the Lady Demons a 2-0 lead.
Walker then lost at No. 3 to Ladutska to push the Wildcats to the brink of defeat; however, ACU responded with Marjanovic's 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kerr and Williams' sweep of Kollarova, 6-2, 6-3.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats were unable to tie the team score as Larina held off Reed at No. 1, 6-0, 7-5, for the match-clinching point. Pothier was last off the courts, falling in three sets to Ivanova, 6-7, 6-1, 10-6, for her first singles defeat of 2015 (7-1).
The Wildcats conclude their Southland road trip Monday at noon vs. Stephen F. Austin.
