ABILENE – A 100 percent chance of thunderstorms in the Friday weather forecast convinced coaches and officials from Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word soccer to play their match Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Elmer Gray Stadium.
Live stats and a video feed of the Wildcats' season finale will be provided. ACU also will honor its three-woman senior class of Lindsey Jones, Nicci Nelson and Rachel Shedd during a pre-match ceremony.
This match is the third in five days for ACU, which tied Sam Houston State 2-2 Sunday and lost 2-0 Tuesday at home to first-place Stephen F. Austin. The Wildcats enter their match vs. the Cardinals in third place, but could move into second depending on the results of Houston Baptist's next two contests tonight and Friday vs. Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Incarnate Word is at the bottom of the Southland Conference standings at 1-6-2 but has always been a tough opponent for the Wildcats, who lead the all-time series 4-3-2 dating back to their days together in the Lone Star Conference. The two sides battled to a 1-1 tie last fall in San Antonio, and the year previous, ACU cruised to a 3-1 win in the final match played at the old Wildcat Soccer Complex.
UIW has only played once in the past 10 days, losing Sunday 2-0 to SFA. The Cardinals were to have played Sam Houston State last Friday, but it was moved to Tuesday because of rain, and then it was postponed once again to Sunday due to a campus emergency. UIW and Sam Houston only will play, however, if the match has an impact on tournament seeding.
