Wildcats Shut Down UIW in Stalemate in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO — Abilene Christian (2-2-3) tied the University of the Incarnate Word 0-0 on Sunday. ACU finished with an 11-7 shot advantage, while Bella Medrano recorded six saves to preserve the shutout.
The Wildcats were led in shots by Reagan Hollis with three off the bench, and six of the team's starters recorded a shot each. Sophia Saludares also tallied two shots coming off the bench.
ACU's offense started strong in the first half with seven shots but then slowed to four in the second half. However, the same happened for UIW, who had five in the first half and only two in the second.
Four of Medrano's six saves came in the first half, and she recorded her fourth shutout of the season, playing all 90 minutes alongside Audrey Coppinger, Gracie Kelly, Baylie Simon and Charlise Smith.
"A hard-working performance from our team on the road," head coach Stephen Salas said. "Our defense stood strong, but we're not satisfied with the tie. Our quality and focus in the final third needs to improve. We saw growth in our vision on the ball and our ability to open up the field. We've been creating dangerous opportunities in and around the box in our previous five non-conference games and need to get back to that. The heat and turf were factors today, but we know we have to control what we can control. We'll create a response in our last non-conference game at home, especially with it being Senior Day."
UP NEXT
ACU will host Texas Southern on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. at Elmer Gray Stadium in Abilene. The Wildcats will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday before they enter into the conference portion of the season on Sept. 24 when they travel to Little Rock.
"Our five seniors have built a foundation of upward trajectory through their service to this program," Salas said, "and we're excited to celebrate them on and off the field next Sunday. We encourage all to come out to support as well!"
