FLORENCE, Ala. — Abilene Christian defeated North Alabama 1-0 on Thursday off a penalty kick from Addison Briscoe. The Wildcats withstood five Lion attacks in the final 10 minutes and finished with a seven-save shutout.
Bella Medrano kept Abilene Christian level through an early UNA push before Briscoe put the Wildcats in front in the 20th minute by converting a penalty kick.
ACU created chances after that through Briscoe, Raegan Hollis and Shakira Kafero-Roberts, while Medrano added a save in the 33rd minute as Abilene Christian took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Briscoe scored the game-winning goal and led Abilene Christian with seven shots, including five on goal. Medrano recorded seven saves over 90 minutes and finished with a shutout, her fourth of the season and the team's sixth.
"A crucial road win and a great team performance," head coach Stephen Salas said. "We met our key objectives by scoring first, earning the shutout, delivering a strong second half, and being disciplined with our game management. Our ball movement and attacking play created energy and numerous opportunities after halftime, while our goalkeeping, backline, and team defending stepped up in a big way. We pride ourselves on being difficult to score against, and we got back to that identity. Bella continued her dominance between the posts, Addison added to her conference-leading goal total, our captains and seniors continue to lead and develop this team, and our attack continues to grow and create more opportunities. There's plenty to be excited about, but we know there's still work to do and plenty to play for."
ACU stays on top of the Red Division with a 2-0-2 record in conference and moved into second in the UAC with the win over UNA, who drops to fourth.
