ABILENE — The Wildcats defeated the University of West Georgia 4-0 Friday afternoon. Abilene Christian scored all four goals in the first half and preserved the shutout while facing 10 West Georgia shots after halftime.
The Wildcats' first goal came off of a corner kick by Baylie Simon that bounced around in the box before finding the back of the net off of a Wolves player. Simon has recently come back from injury and her presence has been felt, especially in Friday's match.
ACU's offense was so strong that West Georgia was unable to get into the attacking half and record a shot until the 31st minute.Â
The Wildcats continued the powerful attack, adding goals in the 39th, 40th and 41st minutes, from Gracie Kelly, Addison Briscoe and Aliyah Anderson.
Kelly scored the first goal of her career on Friday, showing a different aspect of her talent after she has been recognized by the conference for her resilience from the back line.
Briscoe's goal was her eighth of the season and third from the penalty spot, giving her a perfect 3-3 PK record and a tie for the most goals scored by a freshman in ACU's Div. I history.
The Wildcats entered halftime with a 4-0 lead that they maintained throughout the full 90 minutes through the strong performance in goal by Bella Medrano, who recorded her fifth shutout of the season, giving the team its seventh overall.
Medrano finished with nine saves in 90 minutes, including eight in the second half, and did not allow a goal. Anderson scored once, added an assist and finished with three points on two shots. Briscoe scored on her only shot and put it on goal. Kelly added a goal on two shots, including one on frame.
With Friday's win, the Wildcats maintain their position at the top of the Red division of the UAC while moving into first place in the overall standings with a 4-0-2 record.
"A strong conference performance, scoring four goals, earning the shutout, and putting together a complete game," head coach Stephen Salas said. "Addi found the scoresheet once again and continues to lead the conference in scoring, while Gracie Kelly, another Defensive Player of the Year candidate, also got on the scoresheet. Aliyah finished an outstanding goal from distance off a great setup by Raegan. It's been great having Baylie back and seeing the impact of her play and distribution, which helped create our opening goal. Bella and our backline continue to play with determination and consistency, keeping us strong defensively and allowing us to compete on both sides of the ball. We look forward to hosting Eastern Kentucky on Sunday for an exciting matchup between two of the conference's top teams."
