OMAHA, Neb. - Abilene Christian's women's tennis team lost a hard-fought match Sunday to Grand Canyon University, 5-2, in the finals of the inaugural National Invitational Tennis Tournament hosted by Nebraska-Omaha's Hanscom Brandeis Tennis Center.
With the victory, Grand Canyon finished its first season as a NCAA DI member of the Western Athletic Conference at 13-6 and winners of seven of its last eight contests. The loss for ACU snapped a three-match winning streak and dropped its record to 18-6.
The Antelopes became only the sixth team all spring to defeat the Wildcats in doubles before capturing four of six singles matches. ACU's victories were earned at No. 3 by Brittney Reed over Janaki Gunuganti, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and at No. 6 by senior Emily Conrad, who finished her career with a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 10-5 decision over Alexandra Petrzalkov.
Reed's and Conrad's wins extended their personal winning streaks to four.
Unfortunately, senior Micah Hermsdorf's impressive collegiate career ended with consecutive losses. She and sister, Kaysie, lost 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, and then she lost in straight sets for the first time in three weeks to Priscilla Annoual, 6-3, 6-2, to finish the spring at 18-7.
Kaysie Hermsdorf and freshman Erin Walker also fell in straight sets at No. 3 and 2, while 20-match winner Nada Marjanovic lost to Silvia Tumova, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5.
