SOUTHLAKE, Texas – Abilene Christian's 16th-ranked men's tennis team will once again compete for the Lone Star Conference Championship tomorrow at noon following its 5-3 triumph over No. 18 Incarnate Word Friday night at the Southlake Tennis Center.
The Wildcats have won the last four conference championships and 13 since 1983, but Saturday they'll have to battle a 24th-ranked Midwestern State team that earlier today shocked top-seeded Cameron, 5-4.
The Mustangs also beat the Wildcats earlier this season by the same margin.
Tonight's win improved ACU's season record to 14-14, but it didn't come easy as senior Alfredo Desiati – injured for much of the season – was forced to rally from a set down at No. 5 to beat Tucker Brown, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, for the match-clinching point. And earlier in the dual, the young team of Borja Cortes and Jason Proctor held off Brown and Jair Assuncao, 9-7, at No. 2 doubles to give ACU a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
The LSC's Player of the Year Hans Hach had a slightly easier time at No. 1 singles and doubles as he followed an 8-3 win alongside partner Guilherme Gesser with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Assuncao.
Hach has won his last three matches and is now 17-7 on the season.
Conference Freshman of the Year Nicklas Wingord also came away with a straight-set win, beating Mario Jakovljevic, 6-1, 6-3, for his 13th victory of the spring.
