ABILENE – Abilene Christian's 16th-ranked men's tennis team will finish its 2013 regular season Wednesday when it plays host to its crosstown rivals from McMurry. The War Hawks, ranked 47th in the nation behind an overall record of 8-6, have not faced the Wildcats in a dual format since February of 2009.
The Wildcats (12-14, 1-2 Lone Star Conference) are in the midst of a three-match losing streak that started with a 5-4 home loss to the LSC regular season champions from Cameron and continued into last weekend as the Wildcats dropped a pair of 8-1 decisions to Auburn-Montgomery and No. 3 West Florida.
The Warhawks of UA-M, which are the top-ranked team in NAIA, won five of six singles matches vs. ACU, including three in three sets. They also swept ACU in doubles led by their third-ranked duo of Tim Hewitt and Bence Toth.
Things did not get easier for the Wildcats vs. the No. 3 Argonauts as senior all-America Hans Hach earned their lone point at No. 1 singles, edging eighth-ranked Kevin Ducros, 7-6, 7-5, for his team-leading 15th win of the season.
McMurry's Chris Breaux and Felipe Cruz, both of who have a 6-7 win-loss record, lead McMurry from the No. 1 and 2 positions. Cruz is 4-2 at No. 1 and 2-5 at No.2, while Breaux is 1-6 at No. 1 and a combined 5-1 at several other spots.
Casjen Rico has the War Hawks' most wins this season with 10 and Christiano Mendes is second with a 9-4 record.
The Wildcats are one of three LSC teams with a 1-2 record and they won't know until later today when the NCAA Regional Rankings are announced where they'll be seeded in the four-team bracket. ACU started its conference season with a convincing win at Incarnate Word, but then lost 5-4 to both Midwestern State and the Aggies.
According to conference policy, the team with the highest regional ranking will be the No. 2 seed, and then the remaining two seeds will be decided by the head-to-head result. Incarnate Word's lone conference win came at Midwestern State on March 1.
If the Wildcats should somehow fall to the No. 4 seed, they'll face Cameron Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Southlake Tennis Center. The second men's semifinal, pitting the No. 2 and 3 seeds, is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
ACU has won the last four LSC championships and 13 since the tournament's inception in 1973. Cameron won its lone conference title in 2008, while Midwestern State won the championship in 2001 and 2008.
