SOUTHLAKE, Texas – Abilene Christian's 16th-ranked men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to 24th-ranked Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference Championship match hosted Saturday at the Southlake Tennis Center.
The Mustangs' win earned them a third conference title and first since 2006, while simultaneously snapping the Wildcats' four-year winning streak. ACU won a total of 13 LSC titles, nine of which have come since 2002.
Midwestern State (18-5) entered the weekend as the tournament's No. 4 seed, but yesterday upset the top-seeded Cameron Aggies, 5-4, before doing the same today vs. the Wildcats. As a result of their victory, the Mustangs will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, while AC U (14-15) will have to wait until Tuesday night to learn its fate.
The NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Selection Show will air live this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (CT) on NCAA.com.
ACU started the championship dual down 2-1 as both its No. 2 and 3 doubles teams were defeated. Kyle Davidson and Austin Crawford doubled up Borja Cortes and Jason Proctor, 8-4, at No. 2, while at No. 3, Tomas Grejtak and Zack Santagate edged Alfredo Desiati and Nicklas Wingord, 8-5.
ACU's nationally 12th-ranked pairing of Hans Hach and Guilherme Gesser prevented the sweep with its 8-5 triumph over No. 9 Luke Joyce and Colby Meeks. Hach and Gesser have won their last three matches together at the top spot.
Hach today also extended his No. 1 singles winning streak to four matches after coming back from a set down to beat No. 44 Joyce, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. The LSC's Player of the Year, Hach finished the regular season of his senior year with an impressive overall record of 18-7.
The Wildcats captured two additional singles victories. Wingord, a freshman, won his match at No. 3 over Meeks, 6-4, 6-0, while Cortes cruised past Kacper Boborykin, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 as each player improved to 14-12 on the season.
Midwestern State won its three singles matches all in straight sets at the No. 2, 5 and 6 positions.
