STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Following a midweek victory over TCU, Abilene Christian baseball looks to stay hot in a three-game series versus Tarleton State this weekend. The series was rescheduled ahead of expected inclement weather as the Wildcats continue Western Athletic Conference play.
The teams will get started at the Tarleton State Baseball Complex at 6 p.m. Thursday before a 3 p.m. first pitch on Friday. The weekend will wrap up at 12 p.m. Saturday.
ACU picked up its 13th power conference win under head coach Rick McCarty with a 4-1 victory over the Horned Frogs on Tuesday. Over 1,000 fans filled Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark as the Wildcats earned their 16th win versus a power conference opponent since transitioning to the Division I level in 2014.
Catcher Kanon Sundgren shined for ACU with a 4-for-4 performance, including a pair of doubles and an RBI single. JT Thompson plated a pair of runs with a fourth-inning RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the sixth to provide a key insurance run.
Collin Adams was credited with the win after keeping the Horned Frogs scoreless in his predetermined three innings. David Jeon logged 1.2 scoreless frames, and Brady Coe, Logan Young and Evan Whiteaker recorded one scoreless frame apiece.
The Wildcats have come out on top in seven of their last 10 games versus the Texans and have won five of six series against Tarleton State in the Division I era. ACU won the final two games of last season's series in Abilene.
Zandt Payne has reached base safely in 27 consecutive games and has made it aboard in all but one game this season. He carries an eight-game hit streak and has multiple hits in 15 matchups. Payne has scored multiple runs in 11 games, while Cardenas leads the team with 10-multi RBI games.
