Watkins Homers as ACU Falls in Series Opener to Tarleton State

The Wildcats look to even the series at 3 p.m. Friday in Stephenville. Aidan Coleman is slated to start on the mound.
Grant Watkins hit his conference-leading 17th home run of the season in the third inning, while Diego Cardenas and Brady Ladusau tallied two hits apiece. Gavin Brzozowski drove in a pair of runs, and Ladusau crossed home plate twice. Brzozowski and Ryan Jones each plated runs with RBI doubles.
With a pair of walks, Zandt Payne reached base safely for the 28th game in a row.
OJ Gonzalez, Chase Batten and Noah Galvan teamed up to issue two scoreless innings to close out the game.
The Wildcats struck first in the opening frame after Cardenas got aboard with a single. Nick Arias was hit by a pitch to move him to second before Jones doubled down the left-field line to bring Cardenas home.
ACU fell behind 5-1 through two frames, but a three-run third inning got it back in it. Watkins led off with a shot over the right-field fence, while Arias was nailed by another pitch and Jones walked. Ladusau plated a run with an RBI single, moved to third on JT Thompson's single and came home on Brzozowski's RBI double to left field.
The Wildcats' final run came in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Brzozowski that scored Ladusau.
