BEAUMONT, Texas – The Abilene Christian men's tennis team picked up the university's first-ever team Western Athletic Conference championship on Saturday, defeating top seed and host school Lamar by a final of 4-1.
Oswaldo Cano picked up the trophy-clinching point for the Purple and White, and the Wildcats have now won six consecutive matches.
"It's never over until it's over, and yesterday was a great example of that, so I was trying to not get ahead of myself. Lamar is a heck of a team and they are incredibly well-coached, but to see our guys be rewarded for what they have worked for all year long is special," Director of Tennis Juan Nuñez said. "To be honest, I don't even know what happened in the first couple minutes after the clinch. The embraces and the hugs are an amazing feeling, and to be able to tell our guys how much I love them and appreciate them is the perfect way to end the conference season."
