Bearkats slip past women's tennis, 4-3

HUNTSVILLE – Abilene Christian women's tennis lost its third consecutive dual and second straight Southland Conference match Sunday, 4-3, at Sam Houston State's McAdams Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (7-6, 1-2 Southland) looked good in doubles, winning 6-2 at No. 1 and 6-4 at No. 2, but the Bearkats rallied to win four of the final six points in improving to 7-3 overall and 2-1 within the league. ACU's lone singles wins were captured by senior Whitney Williams at No. 2, who beat Khee Yen Wee, 6-2, 6-2, and freshman Nini Memishishi who topped Carrie Casey, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 4.

Williams' triumph provided the Wildcats with a 3-2 lead, however, the Bearkats would tie the team score after Lusine Chobanyan defeated ACU freshman Ileana Mocciola, 7-5, 6-2, and clinched it when Sahaja Yamalapalli battled back to beat sophomore Sarah Eleanor Adams at No. 3, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).

Memishishi was the Wildcats' lone double winner of the day as she and senior Lucile Pothier improved to 12-3 overall behind their seventh-consecutive doubles victory, beating the Bearkats' top-line duo of Roos Gerritsen and Fabienne Gettwart, 6-2. Pothier and Memishishi were promoted to No. 1 after winning eight of their first nine spring matches at No. 2.

Memishishi also is tied with Williams for the team lead with nine singles victories.

The Wildcats return to action Monday for a women's and men's doubleheader at Lamar. Match times are 10 a.m. (men) and 2 p.m. (women).
