Women's tennis defeats Arkansas State, 6-1

JONESBORO, Ark. - Abilene Christian women's tennis won its fifth consecutive dual Saturday, beating Arkansas State on the outdoor courts of Allen Park, 6-1, in its final tune-up before the start of Southland Conference play tomorrow morning at Central Arkansas.

The Wildcats and Bears will begin play indoors at 8:30 a.m. due to a threat of inclement weather.

ACU was sharp today against the Red Wolves, winning all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches in straight sets. The doubles sweep was the Wildcats' fifth of the spring and lifted their combined record to 29-18 (.617) as the No. 1's and 2's each won, 6-4, and the No. 3's pulled out a tiebreaker victory, 7-6 (1).

Erin Walker and Sarah Eleanor Adams have now won eight straight matches together and are 9-1 over their last 10 decisions following their victory at No. 1 over Julie Gauguery and Shannon O'Brien. The teams of Whitney Williams and Lucile Pothier and Ansley Boarman and Jordan Henry, meanwhile, are each 5-2.

Four significant singles winning steaks also were extended today. Henry won her team-leading sixth-consecutive match after topping Tori Roberts at the No. 5 position, 6-4, 7-5, while Williams and Adams pushed their win streaks to five. Williams won at No. 2 over Sabina Jeresic, 6-0, 6-2, while Adams beat Victoria Pisani at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1. Newcomer Elizabeth Ryan remains unbeaten at 4-0 after defeating Allison Quammen at No. 6, 6-1, 6-3.

Pothier won her second straight match since returning from injury, beating O'Brien at the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-1.

ACU beat Central Arkansas last season at home, 5-2, en route to a 9-2 Southland Conference record.
