ABILENE – Abilene Christian soccer plays host to Northwestern State and Central Arkansas during its first full weekend of Southland Conference competition at Elmer Gray Stadium.
The Wildcats and Lady Demons kick off Friday at 7 p.m., while the Bears come to town for a 1 p.m. match Sunday. Both contests will be web cast and offer live stats.
ACU enters this weekend at 2-7-2 overall and 1-1-1 against the league after splitting last weekend's road trip to Louisiana, where the Wildcats followed a convincing 4-1 victory at Nicholls with a tough 1-0 loss to first-place Southeastern Louisiana.
Freshman attacker Dylan Owens was responsible for four points in ACU's win over the Colonels, scoring the game-tying goal late in the first half and assisting on a pair of late second-half insurance goals. However, the conference plaudits for honorable mention player of the week instead went to defensive back Chantal Kinsey and goalkeeper Sydney Newton, who finished the weekend with 14 saves.
Northwestern State is 3-6-2 and remains in search of its first conference victory as its lost the last two matches following a 1-1 conference-opening tie vs. the defending regular season champions from Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Demons were swept at home this past weekend falling to both Lamar (3-1) and McNeese (2-1).
Central Arkansas is 5-6 overall and 2-1 vs. the league after demolishing Lamar last Sunday in Conway, 6-1. The Bears, who will play Friday at Incarnate Word, also edged McNeese last weekend, 2-1, and the week previous lost 2-1 at Sam Houston State.
ACU is 1-0-1 all-time vs. Central Arkansas and twice had to come back in regulation last season against the Bears to settle for a 2-2 tie. The Wildcats defeated UCA at home 2-1 in 2013.
Northwestern State has yet to score a goal vs. the Wildcats in its previous two meetings. The Lady Demons were shut out 1-0 in Natchitoches two years ago, and lost again 3-0 last fall at Abilene's Shotwell Stadium.
