ABILENE - Close to 200 of the region's top collegiate tennis players, representing 14 universities will be here this weekend for the three-day United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Central Regional Championship.
Matches will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday and Monday and split between Abilene Christian's Eager Tennis Pavilion, Rose Park and McMurry's Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. In case of rain, competition will be moved indoors to ACU's Teague Events Center and several additional area venues still to be determined.
Admission is free at all sites.
The Wildcats last played host in 2009 to a regional, a tournament in which they have enjoyed tremendous success over the past several seasons. Junior all-America Hans Hach has won the last two men's singles titles, and was a 2010 doubles champion with Bryan Joiner.
Senior all-America Julia Mongin also has won the past two regional singles crowns and was a doubles champion in 2010 with Jaclyn Walker. Mongin, last season, defeated teammate and junior all-America Micah Hermsdorf in the finals, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Hermsdorf, however, won the 2011 doubles title with Hannah Kelley after they topped the Tarleton State team of Alicia Perez and Brittni Fausett, 6-4, 6-3.
The Wildcats have competed at four fall events leading up to regionals, earning some hardware at each. Hach and Cortés began their season two weeks ago with a runner-up showing at The Midland (Texas) Racquet Club Invitational after falling 8-6 in the finals to Wichita State's Matheus Pereira and Alvaro Gutierrez. The Wildcat duo reached the finals following wins against NCAA D-I teams from New Mexico, Rice and Arkansas.
Hach also beat two opponents in singles, including the top-seeded Pereira in the second round.
Meanwhile, across the New Mexican border in Las Cruces, freshman Kaysie Hermsdorf and senior Laura Mongin won the doubles main draw at the Aggie Invitational, 9-7, over TexAnns Perez and Karla Martinez.
Hermsdorf then won her second major title the following weekend at the Kansas Invitational after going 3-0 in the G Singles Draw.
Hach, last weekend, successfully defended his New Mexico State singles title against Western New Mexico's Rodrigo Almeida, winning 6-2, 6-0. And in doubles, he and Cortés won the championship, 8-1, over the New Mexico State tandem of Daniel Fernandez and Naveen Manivannan.
Almeida is seeded third at regionals and could again face the top-seeded Hach in Monday's finals.
