Volleyball welcomes UT Arlington for 2016 home opener

ABILENE - Abilene Christian volleyball takes a short break from its hectic national tournament schedule Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when it plays host to UT Arlington at Moody Coliseum. The Mavericks are making their second trip to the Key City in three years and are 3-0 all time vs. the Wildcats.

ACU remains in search of its first victory but received a stellar set of performances this past weekend at the Omaha Classic from sophomore outside hitter Jacey Smith. The Wimberley, Texas, native appeared in all 12 sets vs. UMKC, Omaha and South Dakota and finished with 54.5 points as she averaged 4.25 kills per set and posted a .238 attacking percentage. She also delivered two aces against the Roos and registered three block assists against the Coyotes.

In a five-set loss to the host Mavericks, Smith recorded a career high of 21 kills. Sixteen of her 61 kills were against UMKC and the other 14 were vs. South Dakota.

For her efforts at the Omaha Classic, Smith received an honorable mention citation for the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week Award.

UT Arlington (3-4) comes into tomorrow's match having lost four of its last five decisions after starting the year at 2-0 with wins over Sam Houston State (3-2) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-0). The Mavericks then experienced a four-match losing streak against the likes of Sacramento State, North Texas, Ole Miss and North Carolina State before topping McNeese late Saturday, 3-1.

UTA is hitting .186 as a team led by attackers Qiana Canete (2.83 k/s), Kaitlyn Granger (2.68) and Zhanelle Geathers (2.61) and setter Cassidy Wheeler (6.03 a/s). The Mavericks additionally dig out 13.97 attacks per set and have outblocked their opposition, 66.0-44.0.

Smith is the Wildcats' leading scorer with 88.0 points followed by junior outside hitter Corinne Grandcolas (66.0) and senior middle blocker Lexi Mercier (56.0). Mercier has the most blocks of any Wildcat with 20, while sophomore Kendall Bosse is averaging 8.24 assists per set.
