ACU Wins Fifth Straight at Home With 3-1 Victory Over Little Rock

ABILENE — Five Wildcats collected double-digit kills as Abilene Christian volleyball powered its way to a 3-1 win over Little Rock at Moody Coliseum on Saturday. ACU swung for 71 kills, the program's most in a Division I four-set match, while tying the program's DI record with 67 assists in four sets. Both are season highs.
It's the seventh-most kills in a match overall in ACU's DI era. The Wildcats have won 10 of their last 12 matches with a five-match winning streak at Moody Coliseum. Now 3-1 in United Athletic Conference action, ACU wraps up its homestand versus UT Arlington at 6 p.m. Thursday for Purple Night.
The Wildcats won their third match in a row while meeting the Trojans for the first time. Aubrey Beaver put together her best performance of the season with 20 kills and a .370 hitting percentage to go with a career-high six blocks, including one solo rejection. ACU swung at a .321 attack percentage, its second-highest mark of the season.
Alyssa Todd continued her dominant freshman campaign with 15 kills and a season-best two service aces. Hannah Gonzalez contributed 13 kills at a .370 clip with an ace and three blocks.
Hadlee Welch and Avery Thaler continued the Wildcats' efficient attack with 10 kills apiece. Welch posted a team-high .444 hitting percentage, while Thaler remained the conference' most efficient performer with a .400 attack percentage Saturday. She also had a hand in four blocks.
Rachel Koss paved the way for the offensive success with 52 assists and 11 digs, her fourth double-double of the season. It's tied for the second-most assists in four sets in ACU's DI history. She chipped in three kills, an ace and a block. Brennan Ramirez and Abby Christian combined for 47 digs, with Christian notching a couple of aces.
After Little Rock scored four points in a row to grab an 8-6 edge in the opening frame, ACU answered to grab a lead it wouldn't lose for the remainder of the set. A 5-1 rally put the Wildcats in front, 18-12, featuring two kills apiece by Beaver and Welch. ACU kept Little Rock at bay en route to a 25-22 win, capped with Beaver's fifth kill. She had no errors and swung at a .556 clip alongside two blocks. Todd added four kills.
The Wildcats never trailed in the second set on their way to a 25-20 victory. They took an 11-7 advantage in the early going, but the Trojans rallied to even the score at 17. ACU reclaimed the lead and held on, closing the frame on a 3-0 run. Todd and Beaver formed a dynamic duo, combining for 13 of the team's 16 kills. Beaver added two blocks as they swung at a collective .478 clip.
The third frame was a back-and-forth affair and the highest-scoring set the Wildcats have played this season. The teams battled to 14 ties and six lead changes. A 6-2 streak pushed ACU ahead, 12-7, but an 8-1 Little Rock rally put the visitors in the driver's seat at 19-17. Both squads traded points, with the Wildcats staving off a Trojan set point four times. Little Rock fended off a sweep with a marathon 30-28 win.
Gonzalez collected seven kills at a remarkable .778 clip, while Thaler had five kills at .714 and a block. Koss tallied 17 assists.
ACU shook off the loss and raced to a match-clinching victory in the fourth set. After the teams opened at a 6-6 stalemate, the Wildcats scored eight of the next nine points to make it 14-7. ACU scored the set's final three points with kills by Beaver, Thaler and Welch to seal a 25-15 victory.
