Christian Becomes ACU Division I Ace Leader in Sweep of West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. — Abby Christian became Abilene Christian volleyball's Division I career service ace leader in the Wildcats' 3-0 sweep of West Georgia at The Coliseum on Saturday. The senior libero picked up her 104th ace in the second set to write her name in the ACU record books.
The Wildcats picked up their first United Athletic Conference victory with their eighth win in their last 10 matchups. They completed an 8-3 record in the month of September. ACU returns to Moody Coliseum for a three-match homestand beginning versus Austin Peay at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Christian surpassed Madeline Guffy for the Wildcats' career ace record in the Division I era, doing so in 101 matches and 380 sets. She chipped in 10 digs while fellow libero Brennan Ramirez also made history. She produced 27 digs, tying for the most by a Wildcat in a three-set match in the DI era. Ramirez matched Amanda Chapa's 27 digs at McNeese on Oct. 6, 2016.
Hannah Gonzalez led the offense with 10 kills at a .444 hitting percentage to go with five blocks. She matched her career best with five digs. Alyssa Todd and Hadlee Welch collected nine kills apiece, with Todd doing so at a .400 clip. Welch had a hand in three blocks.
Rachel Koss and Avery Thaler combined for seven kills and each logged three blocks. Koss set up 31 assists with an ace.
Both teams found themselves in a stalemate in the opening frame, as a 17-13 ACU lead soon turned into a tie at 18. The Wildcats later faced set point at 24-21, but a 3-0 rally by the Wolves knotted it again at 24. A Thaler kill and a West Georgia attack error soon gave ACU a 27-25 win in the first set. Welch paced the Wildcats with four kills, while Gonzalez and Thaler tallied three kills apiece with five blocks between them.
After Christian's record-setting ace made it 7-5, ACU mounted a 5-0 run in the second set to capture a 10-5 lead it wouldn't lose for the remainder of the frame. The Wildcats later scored four points in a row to move in front 20-13. Gonzalez contributed four kills and two blocks to anchor ACU's attack in a 25-20 victory. Ramirez limited West Georgia to an .023 hitting percentage with 13 of the Wildcats' 24 digs in the period.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair featuring 15 ties and nine lead changes. Both squads traded points before ACU found a breakthrough with four straight points, turning a 21-20 deficit into a 24-21 advantage. The rally included three kills by Todd. Her seventh kill of the set clinched a 25-22 win and a match sweep of the Wolves. Todd attacked at a .583 clip, while Gonzalez, Welch and Aubrey Beaver each registered a trio of kills. Koss had 11 assists.
