ACU Never Trails in Sweep of Austin Peay

ABILENE — Abilene Christian volleyball marked its best start to conference play since 2020-21 as it cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Austin Peay at Moody Coliseum on Thursday night. The Wildcats picked up their ninth win in their past 11 matches, continuing their best start since 2010 while improving to 2-1 in United Athletic Conference action.
ACU never trailed and faced only three ties as it notched its second sweep in a row. The Wildcats continue their three-match homestand versus Little Rock at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. ACU closes out its stay at Moody Coliseum against UT Arlington on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
Hannah Gonzalez powered ACU in its first-ever meeting with Austin Peay with 11 kills at a .346 hitting percentage with four blocks. Avery Thaler, the conference's leader in attack percentage at .365, delivered another efficient performance with 10 kills at a .467 clip. The Wildcats tallied 48 kills, their most in three sets this season.
Alyssa Todd and Aubrey Beaver registered nine kills apiece, with Todd doing so with a .368 hitting percentage. Hadlee Welch chipped in five kills and had a hand in three blocks. Abby Christian, recently crowned the Wildcats' Division I leader in service aces, picked up a pair of points at the service line.
ACU's 42 assists are the most in a three-set match this year, and 40 came from Rachel Koss. It's good for third-most in a three-set match in the Wildcats' DI era. Brennan Ramirez led the way with 13 digs.
Gonzalez and Thaler shined from the get-go, combining for 11 kills in the opening frame. With a 15-13 edge at the media timeout, ACU scored four points in a row to expand its cushion to 19-13. The Wildcats' lead grew to as much as seven before they clinched a 25-18 victory. Thaler had no errors with a .714 attack percentage, while Gonzalez swung at a .455 clip. Koss set them up for success with 13 assists.
ACU came through with an early 5-0 streak in the second set that moved it in front, 10-4. The Governors battled to get within a point at 18-17, but the Wildcats answered with a rally of their own, scoring four straight to grab a 22-17 lead. Todd fueled ACU with five kills at .300, with Koss responsible for each of its 12 assists in a wire-to-wire 25-19 win.
The Wildcats carried their momentum into the third set, jumping on an 8-2 advantage. They later mounted an 8-3 run to seize a 17-8 cushion following the media timeout. ACU kept its foot on the gas en route to a 25-18 win, capped with Gonzalez's 11th kill. She had three kills and two blocks in the final set. Thaler tallied four kills as Beaver had three kills on four attacks. Koss delivered each of the Wildcats' 15 assists.
