CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - A combined four victories, five personal records and 12 trips to the medal stand Sunday at Dugan Stadium elevated Abilene Christian's men's and women's track and field teams into fourth place during the third and final day of competition at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The ACU men, led by victories from Rosen Daniel in the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay, scored 68 points today in moving from ninth to fourth place for the third-consecutive spring since rejoining the Southland Conference. The Wildcats' 79 points were only six points off from last spring's effort of 85 points.
ACU's women continued their progression as wins from Kimone Green in the 400-meter hurdles and Alexandria Hackett in the 5,000-meter run moved the Wildcats from seventh to fourth, which is their highest showing at the outdoor championships. The Wildcats scored 80 points today in finishing with 101 points – a 42-point improvement over last season. Two seasons ago they were 12th with 22 points.
Sam Houston won its fifth women's team championship with 147 points and no one came close to catching the Bearkats as Northwestern State finished 35 points behind in second and Stephen F. Austin edged the Wildcats for third place by 3.5 points.
The men's standings were quite spread out. SFA won its fourth crown with 172 points and Sam Houston was a distant second with 149 points. Northwestern State scored 116 points in claiming third-place honors, 37 points ahead of the Wildcats who finished 19 points in front of Southeastern Louisiana.
Daniel won two gold medals this afternoon, first in the 400m dash and later as the second leg of the Wildcats' 1600m relay. However, he just missed win a third gold in the 200m, losing out to Northwestern State's Amir James by .33 seconds, 20.74 to 21.07.
A three-time Southland champion and seven-time medal winner in only two seasons with the Wildcats, Daniel earned ACU's first-ever Southland Conference gold in the 400m with a time of 46.87 seconds that beat SFA's Jonathon Joe by .04 seconds. Wildcat Deandre McBride took sixth place in this race (48.02), which was one of four scoring events for the senior today as he also finished third in the 200m (21.22), eighth with the 4x100m relay (41.90) and first with the 4x400m as its anchor.
ACU's 4x400m relay also was composed of sixth-place 400m hurdler Lee-Andrew Bloomfield (54.68), who ran leadoff, and senior Devan Brown, who occupied the third leg. Together with Daniel and McBride they posted a stadium record of 3:11.85 that topped SFA's quartet by 1.13 seconds.
The Wildcats' Southland relay victory was their first since 1970 when they won the last of five straight mile relays (1966-70). ACU also had two wins in the 440-yard relay during this era in 1966 and 1969.
Other individuals scoring on behalf of the ACU men today were sprinter Corneil Lionel in 100m (10.47) and 200m (21.38), Sterlen Paul in the 800m (1:54.43), Jeremy Tatham in the sprint hurdles (14.30) and sophomore discus throwers Kai Schmidt (171-04 / 52.23m) and Morgan Knight (164-01 / 50.01m). Schmidt was the runner-up in his event, coming in behind SFA's Lucas Akins who reached a distance of 173-01 / 52.76m.
In the women's discus, sophomore Kayla Melgar was second with her toss of 155-06 (47.41m) that was three inches shy of matching first-place Jessica Spelling of SFA (155-09 / 47.47m).
Incredibly, only three meet records were broken this weekend through 42 events with two of them belonging to Hackett, who followed up Friday night's 10K triumph with a successful defense of her 5K crown - her fifth conference gold medal since last spring.
Hackett this afternoon cruised to the finish line, beating 19 competitors with a time of 16:47.89 that eclipsed the previous meet record of 16:53.52 set by McNeese's Sita Waru in 2000. Lamar's Verity Ockenden was the runner-up 13 seconds behind in 17:03.38 and the bronze medal went to Hackett's twin sister, Michaela, who came across with a PR of 17:19.75.
Allie Hackett's year-to-year progression at the conference championships is nothing short of awe-inspiring. In three years at the cross country championships, she's gone from 75th to 20th to individual champion, while on the oval she's reached the medal stand nine times since the start of the 2015 indoor season beginning with a third-place showing with the distance medley relay. Since then she's won three 5Ks and a cross country 6K, taken second in the 3K and mile, and placed third in the 1500m.
Freshman Aubrey Till earned sixth-place points in the 5K with her PR of 17:45.78 and earlier was one of three Wildcats to score in the 1500m with a fifth-place mark of 4:41.16. Junior Diana Garcia Munoz was second in this race to Ockenden (4:33.33) with her time of 4:36.18 and Michaela Hackett arrived fourth in 4:39.62.
The Wildcats additionally had a strong showing in the 800m with fifth, sixth and seventh-place points scored by Petrene Plummer (2:13.89), last night's steeplechase bronze medalist Marina Guerrero (2:15.28) and Garcia Munoz (2:17.64).
Green and senior classmate Jessica James each scored in three events as both were part of the eighth place 4x100m relay that posted a time of 47.53 and the runner-up 4x400m relay that finished in 3:41.48 to Sam Houston State's 3:40.00.
In between relays, Green made history in becoming ACU's first Southland Conference champion in the 400-meter hurdles, beating the rest of the field by more than a second with a time of 57.78. Green is now the second fastest performer in school history in this event and the first Wildcat since NCAA DII All-America Yolanda Henry in 1987 to break under 58 seconds. Henry remains the varsity record holder in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 57.45.
At three Southland championship meets Green has won three gold medals and reached the medal stage seven times. She previously won the indoor 400m in 2015 and 2016 and was second in the indoor 200m as a junior.
For James, she has medaled six times at three conference meets - three times as an individual and three times on relays. Her runner-up showing today in the 400m of 54.65 was a PR.
