ABILENE - The Abilene Christian track and field program looks to get out to a fast start Friday and Saturday as it travels to College Station, Texas to compete in its first full-team indoor meet of the season at the Texas A&M 11-Team Invitational.
The meet, which takes place at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center, will be broadcast live on SEC Network + and will offer live results.
This is the third consecutive year the Wildcats will open their season at Texas A&M, and this year's field looks to be the strongest yet. Aside from the Wildcats, the Aggies will play host to Baylor, BYU, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Stephen F. Austin, TCU, Texas, Texas State and Texas – San Antonio.
In the USTFCCCA preseason polls, Texas has the No. 2 ranked men's team and No. 3 ranked women's team. Texas A&M is No. 9 and No. 21 for men and women, respectively, while Baylor's women's team is ranked 11th and TCU's men are ranked No. 7.
The meet begins Friday night with the distance medley relay (4:30 p.m.) and the 5,000 meters (5:40 p.m.).
Junior Alexandria Hackett, reigning Southland Conference outdoor 5,000 meters and cross country champion, will look to become the first Wildcat to win an individual title at the Team Invitational, as she and sophomore Gabby Thompson will be the only Wildcats to run the 5K Friday night. Hackett's PR in the event (17:21 outdoors) is well over a minute faster than any other competitor scheduled to race.
Hackett also will compete in the 3K Saturday in what should be a measuring-stick race against top Division I competition.
Action action gets underway Saturday with field events at noon. Track events will start at 12:30 p.m. with the running of the 60 meters prelims.
In the 400-meter dash, senior Jessica James and sophomore Kimone Green will open their second seasons as Wildcats. Green was victorious at the 2015 Southland Conference indoor championships with a time of 55.24, while James recorded the second-fastest time in the prelims (55.95). James and Green will be joined by senior Petrene Plummer and redshirt junior Chartia Hurt to compete in the 4x400-meter relay.
In the field events, the women will be led by juniors Kenzie Mascorro (formerly Kenzie Walker) and Taylor Yantis.
Mascorro vaulted to fourth-place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships in 2015. Her PR of 13-2 (4.01m) is tied for fourth all-time at ACU, and only one inch and a half shy of Angie Aguilar's first-place mark.
SFA's Demi Payne, the current NCAA record-holder (15' 7", 4.75m), is favored to win the women's pole vault.
Yantis, a pentathlete, finds herself in for a busy day Saturday as she will compete in three events – the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump. Yantis was fourth in the heptathlon at the Southland outdoor meet in 2015 with 4,846 points, good for fifth all-time at ACU.
On the men's side, Lionel will lead the charge for the Wildcats in both the 60 meters and 200 meters. Lionel was the only Wildcat to compete at Texas A&M's Reveille Invitational before Christmas break. His times of 6.86 seconds and 21.42 rank him in ACU's top ten for both events.
Lionel's fellow Saint Lucian, senior Rosen Daniel, will look to make a name for himself in the 400-meter dash. Daniel was third in that race at the indoor conference meet last year, but won the 200-meter dash. His indoor PR of 46.89 is third all-time at ACU.
Throwers Kai Schmidt, a sophomore, and senior Jelani Rainey will compete in the shot put and weight throw, respectively, and look to set the tone in the field events for the rest of the Wildcats.
Senior heptathlete Luke Woods will contest the 60-meter hurdles, as well as high jump and pole vault. Woods is a three-time medallist in the decathlon (outdoor) or heptathlon (indoor) in the Wildcats' two seasons in the Southland Conference.
Eight Wildcats – two men and six women - will compete in their first meet as ACU athletes. The most notable name is that of senior Jonathan Epps. The Wildcats' football star will make his track and field debut in the 60-meter dash.
On the women's side, Hurt will race in the 60-meter and 200-meter, as well as the 4x400-meter relay. Hurt redshirted in 2015 after transferring from Western Texas College.
Freshman distance runners Carnley Graham, from Prosper, Texas, and Aubrey Till of Canon City, Colorado, will open their track and field seasons in the 3000 meters, after contributing to the Southland Conference championship-winning women's cross country team in the fall.
Freshman Mackenzie West, from Portland, Texas, and sister of senior basketball player Whitney West-Swinford, will compete in the pole vault, while freshman thrower Taylor Posey from Rotan, Texas, will contest the shot put and weight throw.
