ALBUQUERQUE - Abilene Christian Track and Field enjoyed another excellent day of performances from start to finish during Saturday's second day of competition at the star-studded New Mexico Track and Field Classic hosted by the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Tops among all performers today was newcomer Rosen Daniel, who added a third-place showing in the 400-meter dash and a fifth-place mark with the 4x400-meter relay to his fourth-place time Friday in the 200m.
Daniel, who transferred to ACU this offseason from Coppin State, moved up to third among ACU's all-time top performers with his 400m time of 46.78, which ranks behind Kempa Busby's 46.54 from 1998 and Robert Guy's 46.66 from 1995.
Finishing ahead of Daniel today were unattached competitor Aldrich Bailey (45.96), a two-time World Junior Championships gold medalist, and Zack Bilderback (46.50) of the Texas Longhorns who was an All-America in this event last winter.
Later in the afternoon, Daniel along with teammates
Devan Brown, Osei Allyene-Forte and Deandre McBride won their heat in the 4x400 with the 10th fastest time in ACU indoor history of 3:12.35. They are the first relay to crack the top-10 performance list in this event since January of 2009 when the team of Des Jackson, Harold Jackson, Jordan Johnson and Raymond Radway did so at Texas Tech.
"Rosen Daniel showed today that he is one of the top 400 meter runners in the world," said Wildcats' head coach
Keith Barnier. "He has a quiet confidence that inspires the whole team when he performs."
"The men's 4x4 won (its heat) by 40 meters so we are looking forward to the conference competition next week," he added, "plus Kimone (Green) and Jessica (James) are now ranked first and second in the Southland 400m. I also feel that Allie (Hackett), Jelani (Rainey) and Lexus (Williams) seem to be peaking at the right time ... We as a team can't wait to get on the track again for the conference championship."
Elsewhere on the track,
Johnathan Farquharson was fifth in the 60m with a mark of 6.84 and Williams broke her own varsity record in the 60-meter hurdles with an 11th-place time of 8.60. Her previous best was 8.71 seconds.
Farquharson clocked a 6.80 during prelims, which is the fastest mark seen the Southland Conference this season.
In the women's 400-meter dash, Kimone Green recorded a PR of 55.69 to finish ninth while Jessica James - the defending Southland Conference Athlete of the Week - finished right behind her in 55.83.
Alexandria Hackett, meanwhile, followed yesterday's runner-up showing in the 3,000-meter run with a fifth-place mark of 5:04.94 in the mile. Her XC teammate Diana Garcia-Munoz wasn't too far behind, coming in eighth with a PR of 5:09.20.
Freshman Kai Schmidt was ACU's top performer Saturday in the field events, coming in eighth in the shot put with a personal best toss of 50 feet-11.00 inches (15.52m).
For the weekend, ACU student-athletes registered 28 personal records.
The Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships are scheduled for Feb. 16-17 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
