CARTER HAHN POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH GRANT BOONE
CANYON - Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M split its doubleheader played Saturday at David and Myrt Wilder Park. ACU won the first game 3-0 behind senior Carter Hahn's five-hit, complete game shutout, but lost the night cap 3-1 as Aaron Lambrix was out-dueled by Paul Pulley, who allowed just three hits through 6.2 innings.
Carlos Maese relieved Pulley (3-1) with one on and two outs in the seventh and got Travis Schuetze to end the game with a ground ball to third. For Maese, it was his third save of the year.
The split gives ACU an overall record of 22-14 and 10-5 mark vs. the Lone Star Conference, while the Buffaloes are 20-14 and 7-8 going into Sunday's 1 p.m. finale. ACU has yet to lose an LSC series this season.
In game one of today's twin bill, Hahn recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts as he improved to 6-2 on the season. His previous high of nine Ks was registered earlier this season during a 4.0 inning relief appearance at McMurry in early March.
His shutout was his second of the year as he previously shared one with Brady Rodriguez on Feb. 23 in a 5-0 win vs. New Mexico Highlands. Hahn struck out six in that start over 5.1 innings before giving way to Rodriguez.
Hahn today pitched his way out of two big jams, including one in the second inning with the bases loaded and no outs. The senior transfer from Lamar began the frame by allowing three consecutive bunt singles, but then he got an out at home plate followed by a strikeout of Beto Rodriguez and ground ball off the bat of Jarvis Smith.
In the third, Hahn put two aboard with one out but came back by freezing cleanup hitter Parker Wood on a called third strike and ended the inning with another routine grounder to second.
Hahn went on to surrender just one hit over the final four innings and got Smith to line out to left to end the game.
The Wildcats scored a run apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings as they ripped eight hits and drew three walks against starter Joshua Wyeker (2-4), and relievers Scott Cone and Billy Gonzalez.
Schuetze tripled to lead off the fourth and scored on Chuck Duarte's fly ball to right for the game's first run, and then in the sixth, he came around again when shortstop Matt Redfearn was charged with an error trying to field a ground ball put in play by Ty Taylor.
ACU received an insurance run in the seventh on Duarte's RBI single that plated Kyle Giusti from second base.
Giusti, Schuetze and Duarte all finished game one with two hits. Both of Schuetze's were for extra bases.
In game two, however, the Wildcats were limited to three hits and the only run they scored was an unearned one in the fifth that cut WT's lead to 3-1. Kyle Conwell reached on an error to begin the inning, went to second on a ground ball to short and to third on a wild pitch. Duarte then brought Conwell home with a ground ball to third.
Rodge Macy followed with a double to the right-field corner but was tagged out at third for the final out, trying to stretch his hit into a triple.
After Macy's hit, Pulley retired the next five batters before being lifted in favor of Maese after giving up a single to Conwell.
West Texas scored all three of its runs off Lambrix (3-3) in the third and all with two outs. Mitch Tybroski drove in the first two runs on a double to the left-center gap, and then Wood switched places with him following his two-bagger off the left-field wall.
Lambrix found himself in trouble several more times after the third, but got three fly balls to escape a two-on, no-out jam in the fourth, and later got a 4-6-3 double play to end a threat in the fifth.
In the sixth, Lambrix left a WT runner stranded a third with a strikeout of Redfearn - his third and last of the game.
ACU will return home next weekend for a four-game series vs. Cameron.
