ABILENE – Winners of their first three Lone Star Conference series, the Abilene Christian Wildcats reach the halfway point of their final season as LSC members this weekend with a four-game set at West Texas A&M.
The series begins Friday at 7 p.m. followed by Saturday's 4 p.m. doubleheader and Sunday's 1 p.m. matinee. Friday's and Saturday's games will be broadcast live in Abilene on AM-1280 KSLI.
The Wildcats (21-12) begin the week tied for first place in the LSC with Tarleton State at 9-3 and are 3.0 games ahead of 6-6 Texas A&M-Kingsville, Incarnate Word and Angelo State. The Buffaloes, meanwhile, are tied for sixth with Eastern New Mexico at 5-7, and Cameron sits in the basement at 2-10.
ACU's series win last week at home vs. the Greyhounds did not come easy as all four games were decided by two runs or less. The Wildcats lost the first game in extra innings, 11-10, but went on to receive three consecutive quality starts from Carter Hahn, Aaron Lambrix and Ty Taylor on Friday and Saturday.
Hahn held the league's best hitting team to one run on three hits in a 2-1 Wildcat victory, and then in game two, Kyle Conwell tied a team and conference single-game record with three home runs that brought ACU all the way back from an early 4-0 deficit.
Conwell's first two home runs came against Eastern's Brian Kennedy in the fourth and fifth innings and pulled the Wildcats to within a run at 4-3. Then in his final at-bat leading off the seventh inning, he drilled a walk-off shot vs. reliever Dylan Montano on a 3-2 pitch, which was ACU's first since 2008 (Mike Elkerson vs. East Central).
Conwell's performance earned him a share of the conference's Diamond Player of the Week award. He is the sixth Wildcat this season to receive the league's weekly honor, joining Kyle Giusti and pitchers Hahn, Taylor, Lambrix and Brady Rodriguez.
Rodriguez again was a workhorse out of the ACU bullpen as he appeared in three games, totaling 3.2 innings and two strikeouts. And although he was roughed up a bit in game one, Rodriguez scored the victory in relief of Lambrix in game three and earned his sixth save of the year after closing out game four with a strikeout of Derek Crenshaw with runners in scoring position.
Rodriguez' six saves tied him for the seventh-highest single-season total in school history with Ruben Rivera (2006), Jarrod Cross (1999) and Kris Carlson (2011).
In addition to Conwell, sophomore Tyler Eager also had a strong weekend at the plate vs. Eastern New Mexico, going 7-for-14 with two runs, a stolen base and a RBI. The sophomore is now batting .341 on the season and is one of three Wildcats ranked among the league's top-10 leaders with 42 hits. Seth Spivey has 43 hits and Travis Schuetze has 41.
West Texas A&M (18-13) is coming off its second series split of the season as the Buffaloes came back to win games three and four last weekend at Angelo State. WT also split its first series at Cameron before coming home to drop 3 of 4 to Tarleton State.
The Buffs beat the Rams 3-1 in Friday's nightcap thanks to a dominating performance from pitcher Dylan James, who struck out a career high and school record 14 batters in recording his first win of the season.
WT's offense then took over in game four as the Buffs posted a 14-3 run-ruled game Saturday. West Texas was assisted in its victory by seven Angelo State errors.
The Buffaloes currently own the league's second-highest team batting average at .328 led by Mitch Tybroski (.389) and Matt Redfearn (.383). They also have the second-lowest staff ERA at 3.49.
James is WT's leader with 46 strikeouts, two complete games and a .175 opponents' batting average.
ACU leads its' all-time series vs. West Texas A&M, 78-34, following last year's four-game split in Abilene.
