WACO, Texas - Abilene Christian's 14th-ranked men's tennis team split a pair of matches at the Hurd Tennis Center Saturday afternoon as it followed a 9-0 win over Temple Junior College with a 7-0 loss to the 26th-ranked and 8-1 Baylor Bears.
No. 45 and senior Alfredo Desiati was the lone Wildcat to win a set, however, he wound up losing in three sets on a supertiebreaker to Robert Verzaal at the No. 6 position, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0.
The rest of the Wildcats (7-5) lost in straight sets, but not without first putting up a strong fight. No. 2 Hans Hach was twice edged at the No. 1 position by 43rd-ranked Julian Lenz, 6-4, 7-6, in snapping an eight-game winning streak, while two freshmen, Nicklas Wingord and Jason Proctor were each doubled up their Baylor opposition, 6-3, 6-3, at the 4 and 5 spots, respectively.
In today's first match, ACU rolled over Temple Junior College, 9-0, for its second shutout of the week and third of the month. Sophomore Guilherme Gesser posted a double-bagle win at NO. 3, while Wingord at No. 4 and Proctor at No. 5, each came within a point or two of matching Gesser's accomplishment.
Also claiming singles victories vs. Temple JC were Hach, Borja Cortes at No. 2 and Desiati at No. 6.
Desiati and Wingord combined for a 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, while the two other Wildcat duos each won by an 8-2 score.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday with a big match in Austin vs. regional rival St. Edward's, which defeated them at home, 5-4, last season.
