ABILENE - Rodge Macy's eighth-inning RBI single served as the game-ending hit in Abilene Christian's 15-5 win over New Mexico Highlands Friday night at Crutcher Scott Field.
The victory lifted ACU's season record to 6-4, while the Cowboys fell to 1-4.
The Wildcats tonight ripped 14 hits vs. three pitchers and were helped along the way by nine walks, four errors, two wild pitches, two hit by pitches and a balk.
ACU also tied a single-game team record with nine stolen bases, which it has now accomplished on five occasions. The Wildcats last recorded nine steals during a 2011 game vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Cowboy starter Chris Prokupek (0-1) experienced much of this misfortune and more during the Wildcats' four-run third inning, which foreshadowed all that was still to come in a slowly and slovenly played 3 hour and 26 minute contest.
ACU's No. 9 batter Ryan Luckie led off the third with a walk followed by leadoff batter Seth Spivey getting plunked in between the shoulder blades with a pitch. The two runners each advanced one base on a balk and again on a wild pitch that tied the score at 1-1.
In fact, two of the three runs Luckie scored tonight were on wild pitches.
Spivey, meanwhile, scored four times to raise his season total to 18. He nearly tied the team's single-game record of five, but was gunned out at home plate in the sixth.
After Spivey came across in the third to give ACU the lead for good on Kyle Giusti's RBI ground ball, Macy singled, stole a base and scored on a Travis Schuetze single to center.
Chuck Duarte then ripped his second of three hits to score Schuetze, and the route was on.
The Wildcats scored once more in the fourth to make it a 5-1 game before pounding the bullpen of Edgar Vela and Daniel Clark for 10 runs between the sixth and eighth innings.
Spivey's RBI triple in the seventh was, incredibly, ACU's lone extra-base hit of the game even though the Wildcats sent all nine men to the plate in the eighth, scoring six times.
Spivey (2-3) was one of four Wildcats with a multi-hit game along with Macy (2-4), Schuetze (2-3) and Duarte (3-3). Tyler Eager, however, had the most RBI with three - all of which came in the final two innings.
Spivey and Macy were each credited with two stolen two bases, while Giusti swiped three. Eager and Duarte had the other two.
ACU's Ty Taylor (1-2) was effective through 5.0 innings as the starter, striking out six and holding the Cowboys to two runs for his first win as a Wildcat. He was lifted in the sixth by Brady Rodriguez, who allowed just one hit though two scoreless innings.
Aaron Lambrix entered the game in the eighth with ACU ahead 9-2 and got caught between a few unlucky moments before escaping with a double play. Of the three runs Lambrix allowed, only one was earned.
The Wildcats and Cowboys resume their four-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader.
