Wildcats Take 2-1 Series Lead On New Mexico Highlands Following Doubleheader Split

ABILENE - Humbled in game one, the Abilene Christian baseball team came back to post a balanced 5-0 win over New Mexico Highlands in the second game of their doubleheader played Saturday at Crutcher Scott Field.
Following today's split, ACU enters Sunday's 1 p.m. finale of its four-game series vs. the Cowboys at 7-5, while New Mexico Highlands stands at 2-5.
Game Two starter Carter Hahn improved to 2-0 on the season after shutting out the Cowboys on six hits and six strikeouts over 5.1 innings. His biggest accomplishment, however, was stranding seven base runners, including two each in the second, third and fourth innings.
Hahn wiggled his way out of a two-out jam with runners at the corners in the second with a strikeout of shortstop Jarod Jamerson. Then in the third he faced a two-on, one-out situation before getting the No. 4 and 5 hitters on a strikeout and groundout.
In the fourth, Hahn put the first two runners on base via single and walk, but then made a good throw to first on a sacrifice bunt, struck out Jamerson a second time, and got leadoff man Jordan Goliat to leave two in scoring position with a ground ball to first.
Brady Rodriguez followed Hahn to the mound in the sixth and retired the first three batters he faced before walking the leadoff man in the seventh. But two batters later he got Scott Frazier to ground into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play.
The save was Rodriguez' first of the season.
After being three-hit in an 11-1 loss by Greg Hansen in game one, the Wildcats' offense scored five times on nine hits during their nightcap win vs. Ray Torres.
ACU plated its first three runs in the third on three hits and a two-base error by the left fielder Matt Gualco following Seth Spivey's routine single. Ty Taylor scored all the way from first base on Gualco's bobble with Spivey hustling all the way to third.
Spivey would score two batters later on Kyle Giusti's sacrifice bunt, while Tyler Eager came home on a RBI single by Rodge Macy that made it a 3-0 game.
The Wildcats added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on Kyle Conwell's triple to the wall in right center. Travis Schuetze and Chuck Duarte scored on the hit.
Schuetze finished today's doubleheader 3-for-6.
Eager made what could end up being the Wildcats' defensive play of the year in the third inning of game one as his curled his waist around the fence down the right-field foul linejust before extending his glove past the first row of bleachers to catch a foul ball put in play by Justin Rodriguez.
