ABILENE – The Abilene Christian baseball team welcomes south central region rival New Mexico Highlands to Crutcher Scott Field this weekend for a four-game series. Game times are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 5 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
New Mexico Highlands is part of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, which comprises one-third of the new south central region along with the Lone Star and Heartland Conferences.
The Wildcats are 5-6 all-time vs. the Cowboys and last faced them in 2009 when they split a four-game series in Abilene. ACU lost the first two games, 10-3 and 7-5, but won the next two, 10-2 and 3-2.
ACU enters the weekend 5-4 after cruising to a 10-2 win over McMurry Sunday at Walt Driggers Field. Starter Jordan Herrera (3-0) won the game after striking out seven batters through 5.0 innings. Newcomer Carter Hahn then came on in the sixth and whiffed a season-high nine batters to finish the game. Hahn – a transfer from Lamar – has already punched out 22 hitters through 14.2 innings pitched to rank second within in the Lone Star Conference. Herrera has struck out 20 in 18.0 frames and ranks third.
ACU's 16 strikeouts were two shy of the club's single-game record set in 1993 vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville, and were the most by a LSC team since Feb. 3, 2012 when Angelo State registered 17 vs. Ouachita Baptist.
On offense, the Wildcats ripped nine hits and drew nine walks vs. the War Hawks as they scored in all but three innings. Chuck Duarte extended his season-best hitting streak to five games with a 2-for-4, two run performance, while Travis Schuetze, Rodge Macy and Seth Spivey all reached base for the ninth-consecutive game.
Spivey, who is tied for third in the LSC with 14 runs, scored three times on a base hit and three walks. Macy went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI and Schuetze went 2-for-4 with two RBI for his fourth multi-hit game of the season. Schuetze now ranks sixth in the LSC with a .462 batting average. Spivey is a little further down the list at .417.
New Mexico Highlands started its 2013 campaign last weekend with a 1-3 series vs. Eastern New Mexico, during which the Cowboys were outscored 40-34. Highlands outslugged the Greyhounds in game one, 22-16, but was later held to two runs in game two, and five runs each in games three and four.
The Cowboys' starting rotation finished the series with an 11.21 ERA and .405 opponents' batting average.
New Mexico Highland's starting lineup featured four starters who hit .500 or better vs. the Greyhounds: Jordan Falcon (4-6, 4 runs), Josh McMahon (6-10, 1 HR, 5 RBI), Jordan Goliat (8-14, 7 runs, 3 RBI) and Kyle Davis (6-12, 6 runs, HR, 7 RBI). As a team, the Cowboys' hit .367 and posted a .578 slugging percentage.
