ABILENE - The Abilene Christian tennis teams will face a pair of nationally ranked squads from Midwestern State in their 2012 home finale Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the outdoor Eager Tennis Pavilion. The game-time forecast calls for sunny skies and a high temperature of 79 degrees.
The co-ed doubleheader is a major event for ACU Tennis at the conference, regional, and national levels, and as such, head coach Hutton Jones is encouraging all students, faculty and staff to come and show their support.
"We want everybody to come out to the courts right after work, and have some (complimentary) Dr. Pepper to drink while enjoying two nationally ranked programs square off against each other," he said. "It should be an exciting competition."
ACU's women's team has been playing sensational tennis all season long and comes into this week sporting a No. 6 national ranking and overall record of 18-3. The Wildcats are also 9-0 at home and 5-0 vs. the South Central Region.
Julia Mongin, the No. 2 singles player in all of NCAA Division II, leads the Wildcats from the No. 1 line, where she is 12-1 this season and in the midst of a 10-match winning streak. She is equally potent in doubles as evidenced by her 14-1 record.
Mongin is a perfect 7-0 in doubles this spring with her twin sister, Laura, and 4-0 with Brittney Reed.
Anchoring the doubles lineup, however, is the No. 11 tandem of Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley, which has lost only twice this season at the No. 1 position. Recently the duo had its nine-match winning streak snapped vs. Texas-El Paso, but just prior to that Hermsdorf and Kelley survived a 9-8 (23-21) marathon match vs. the New Mexico State combination of Natalia Salum and Manon Sylvain.
Jones said that match was "unofficially" the longest in the history of ACU doubles.
Hermsdorf and Kelley likely will have their hands full again when they face the team of Kendra Casey and Rozike Janzen Van Rensburg, which is 7-2 and ranked 17th nationally.
Janzen Van Rensburg also plays at No. 1 singles for the No. 39 Mustangs (6-9), while Casey has split time this spring between the 4 and 5 positions. Neither player owns a record above .500, but at the same time MSU has recently endured a challenging DII schedule that's included No. 9 West Florida, No. 12 Rollins and No. 32 Dallas Baptist. The Mustangs lost all three matches as well as a 7-2 decision to Central Oklahoma before ending their six-match losing streak Saturday with a win vs. East Central.
Despite having won seven of its last eight, ACU's men's team (15-7) deeply covets a quality victory over the No. 34 Mustangs after a 5-4 defeat to St. Edwards on March 10 dropped its national ranking to 16th and regional standing to third. The Wildcats responded to that loss with a perfect Spring Break trip through Missouri followed by consecutive 5-4 victories over nationally ranked regional foes from Cameron and Drury.
More recently, however, the Wildcats clubbed the No. 50 team from St. Mary's, 9-0, in improving to 6-1 at home.
Hans Hach is ACU's No. 1 player in both singles and doubles with combined record of 36-4. He is ranked sixth nationally in singles with a 17-3 mark at the top line, and with Nick Plum comprises the No. 6 doubles team. Hach is 7-0 with Plum at No. 1, and also has won five matches with Guilherme Gesser, and four with Alfredo Desiati.
In line to challenge Hach and company from Midwestern State (6-8) is the region's 15th-ranked singles player Luke Joyce (1-5) and the No. 8 doubles combo of Jarrod Liston and Tomas Gretjak (8-5).
Mario Urban also has played several matches for MSU this season at the No. 1 line, where he is 3-4.
