CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The ACU Wildcats will have 17 athletes and one relay team in action this weekend as their men's and women's teams try to return to the victory stand at the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships at the Irwin Belk Complex.
The meet will begin Thursday with the multi-event competitions and continue through Saturday's finals.
The ACU women – who finished sixth last year after winning the national championship in 2008 – will have 10 athletes in 10 events and one relay in the field. The ACU men – who finished second to St. Augustine's last year after winning the crown in 2008 – will have seven athletes in 11 events.
However, for what might be the first time in its NCAA history, the Wildcats will not have either a 4x100 relay team or 4x400 relay team in the field.
The ACU men have two athletes entering the meet as the No. 1-ranked athlete in their respective event as Desmond Jackson and Amos Sang are ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 100 meters and 5000 meters, respectively. Jackson has the top 100 time in the country at 10.31, while Sang has the top 5000-meter time in the nation at 13:50.77.
Jackson is also ranked No. 3 in the 200 meters (20.84), while Sang is ranked No. 2 in the 10,000 meters (29:15.58).
Defending national outdoor champion and reigning indoor national champion Ramon Sparks is ranked No. 2 in the triple jump (52-6.50), and he's also ranked No. 6 in the long jump (24-5.50).
Pole vaulters Landon Ehlers and Aaron Cantrell (16-7.50 each) are ranked No. 4 in the country. ACU's other entries are Tyler Fleet in the discus (No. 5) and hammer throw (No. 10) and James Hardin in the decathlon (No. 8).
On the women's side, two-time defending national champion Linda Brivule is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the javelin (167-7). A win this weekend would make Brivule the first NCAA Division II female athlete to win three straight national championships in the javelin.
ACU's other top-three athletes are Paige Newby in the discus (157-2), Amanda Clemons in the triple jump (40-10.25) and Wanda Hutson in the 100 meters (11.47). Hutson is also competing in the 200 meters and will run on ACU's second-ranked 4x100 relay team.
Senior Kim Prather – who was second last year in the 400 meters – will compete in the 200 meters and 400 meters and run the anchor on the Wildcats' 4x100 relay team.
Other athletes competing this weekend for the athletes will be Sydney Smith (100 meters and 4x100 relay), Anais Belledant in the 1500 meters, Destinee Nixon in the triple jump, Jessica Sloss in the hammer throw and Jessica Withrow in the heptathlon.
