FIRST PITCH
ACU travels to Southeastern Oklahoma for a four game conference series at The Ballpark in Durant. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats are 17-2 coming off a weekend sweep of East Central, which included a pair of run-rule games in the nine-inning contests. Cameron Bankston got a start in two of the games as he proceeded to hit .714 with a homerun and four RBIs. Outfielders Travis Latz and Clint Bowker also hit over .500 as Latz hit .571 with three doubles and three RBIs and added a slugging percentage of .786. Bowker hit right at the .500 mark as he saw action in two games vs. his former team going 3-for-6. Will Calhoun who saw pitching duties in the mid-week game against St. Edward's also got arguably his best start of the season in the finale Saturday evening. Calhoun went 6 innings allowing five hits and striking out six, as he did not allow a run on Saturday. Aaron Lambrix also had a solid outing throwing a seven inning complete game scattering four hits while striking out five. ACU used an overall team ERA of 1.55, as the entire pitching staff for the Wildcats was solid allowing only six runs over the weekend.
SERIES HISTORY
ACU leads the series with the Savage Storm 26-15. Last year ACU took the regular season series in Abilene taking 3-of-4. The Wildcats also got a win in the Lone Star Conference tournament over Southeastern, 7-2. Preston Vancil was able to avenge the loss from Southeastern in the regular season getting a 7-2 win on his way to tournament MVP honors. Since re-starting the baseball program in 1991 the Wildcats and Savage Storm first meeting came in the 1994 season as Southeastern took the first game with ACU winning the nightcap.
UP NEXT
ACU will being a six-game road swing that will take them through spring break. The Wildcats will open next weekend in Durant, Oklahoma against Southeastern Oklahoma in a four game LSC series. ACU will hit the road for two nine-inning games in Cleveland, Mississippi against nationally ranked #10 Delta State. It will be the first time since 2008 when the Wildcats made the South Regional in Cleveland, but did not play the Statesmen. 2008 was the last time the two teams met as ACU hosted Delta State in a three-game series which the Statesmen took 2 of 3.
Uechi moves up in the Record Books
Senior shortstop Will Uechi recorded a double that skipped by the third base bag and down the left field line for hit #282 making him the all-time leader in hits at ACU and the LSC. Uechi had a great weekend hitting .467 as he added seven hits giving him 288 all-time. His three doubles over the weekend gives him 50 all-times moving him into fifth. He also scored five runs giving him 184 all-time which ties him for third all-time and just 43 shy of leader Matt Davidson's 227.
Bochsler continues to Streak
Firstbasemen Bret Bochsler added five more hits against East Central to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. The next longest streak is 11 held by Travis Latz who also holds the next longest current streak at 5 games with two other Wildcats. Bochsler added a no-doubt homerun down the right field line on Saturday for his third long ball of the season.
AO=SB
Junior Aaron Oliver has shown his speed in a bunch of ways for the Wildcats early this season. Already Oliver is 7-for7 on the base paths even though he missed the series in Kingsville giving him 15 games on the season. He also recorded back-to-back triples against St. Edward's, tying an ACU record for triples in a game. Oliver's speed has been noticed scoring this weekend a couple times from first and tracking down numerous fly balls from his centerfield position.
Ride the Train
Just as the mid-90's song by the Quad City DJ's had become popular at baseball parks over the years when teams score ACU has heard their share of the song playing this year. The Wildcats currently have scored 180 runs as a team, which puts them on pace to challenge the record set by the 2008 team of 535. Against East Central the Wildcats defiantly scored plenty of runs outscoring the Tigers 42-6, but you can never have too many runs.
